2000 Jeep Wrangler Full Review
Date Published: 10/01/08
2000 Jeep Wrangler Review
The 6-cylinder engine in Jeep's tradition-bound SUV gets modifications aimed at smoother operation, standard radios are upgraded, and rear child-seat tethers are added for 2000.
Wranglers come with a soft top and plastic side windows; a hardtop with glass windows is optional. The base SE model has a 4-cylinder engine. Sports and Saharas use Jeep's inline 6-cylinder. Manual transmission is standard; a 3-speed automatic is optional. All Wranglers have 4-wheel drive that's for use only on slippery surfaces. Antilock brakes are optional on 6-cylinder models.
For 2000, the Sport's standard AM/FM radio adds a cassette player and speakers mounted in the roll bar, and the Sahara exchanges a cassette player for a CD player. Also, the optional tilt steering wheel on SE and Sport is now the same leather-covered unit standard on Sahara.
Competition
Ignored in the past, compact SUVs are now some of the hottest-selling vehicles around. The two current Best Buys are the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester. Though they don't offer true off-road ability, they mix the best ride, cargo, and comfort characteristics with all-weather traction. Toyota's RAV4 , which used to be a Best Buy, falls to Recommended based on its noisy engine and cramped rear seating area. Toyota hopes that will change when an all-new RAV arrives in 2001. As immovable as Mt. Rushmore, the Jeep Wrangler continues as our Budget Buy in this segment. Though it has become a status symbol of late, it's most at home crawling over rocks and fording river beds.
News
A redesigned Wrangler is due for 2002, a year or so behind a new-generation Cherokee sport-utility. This and the fact that both will be built in the same new Toledo, Ohio plant suggests greater component-sharing between these Jeeps than has been the case. Nevertheless, Wrangler will retain the classic 2-door look and format that hark back to World War II, though appearance is said to be further modernized along the lines of the recent Ikon and Jeepster concept vehicles. Think today's Wrangler, but with more exaggerated shapes and much larger available wheels and tires. Price levels and model names will likely be shuffled, but the current 4-cylinder and straight-6 engines are expected to carryover with refinements. The same applies to drive systems. A long-wheelbase 4-door Wrangler, suggested a few years back by the Dakar concept, is apparently not in the cards.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

SE, 4 cyl man. Sport/Sahara, auto. Class Average
2 4 2.9

The 4-cylinder must be worked hard most all the time, even with manual shift. The six delivers good go with either transmission, though it doesn't make a hot rod of the 3000-pound Wrangler.
Fuel Economy

SE, 4 cyl man. Sport/Sahara, auto. Class Average
4 4 4.8

It isn't great. We averaged 15.2 mpg in our last test of a 5-speed Sahara, just slightly better than we get with the 4-cylinder.
Ride Quality

SE, 4 cyl man. Sport/Sahara, auto. Class Average
1 1 2.7

Wrangler isn't the oxcart it once was, but a short wheelbase and off-road-ready suspension trigger abrupt vertical ride motions even on apparently smooth roads.
Steering/Handling/Braking

SE, 4 cyl man. Sport/Sahara, auto. Class Average
3 3 3.5

What makes for a bouncy ride also makes for skittish cornering on bumpy surfaces. The steering isn't very precise either. At least Wrangler is very maneuverable on-road and off.
Quietness

SE, 4 cyl man. Sport/Sahara, auto. Class Average
1 1 2.4

Sound insulation is sparse, so wind noise is deafening in the convertible even with the top up. It's less brutal with the hardtop, but that only allows copious tire noise to drum through.
Controls

SE, 4 cyl man. Sport/Sahara, auto. Class Average
3 3 4.4

Wrangler's dash has logically grouped gauges and controls that are easy to reach.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

SE, 4 cyl man. Sport/Sahara, auto. Class Average
4 4 4.4

Head room is terrific with either top, and the chair-height seats are comfortable, but occupants sit rather close together. Entry/exit requires a big step over an intrusive doorsill.
Room/Comfort (rear)

SE, 4 cyl man. Sport/Sahara, auto. Class Average
2 2 2.9

Two adults fit without touching shoulders, but knee room is tight. The bench seat itself almost belongs in a park.
Cargo Room

SE, 4 cyl man. Sport/Sahara, auto. Class Average
7 7 6.6

A few grocery bags fit behind the back seat, which folds or removes for steamer-trunk space. The soft top is a time-consuming tussle to raise or lower. The hardtop is just as difficult to remove.
Value within Class

SE, 4 cyl man. Sport/Sahara, auto. Class Average
3 3 3.8

Wrangler isn't comfortable, but few vehicles have more personality or better off-road ability. Six-cylinder models can quickly top $20,000, but all versions have strong resale value.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
