ACCELERATION
| SE, 4 cyl man. | Sport/Sahara, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 4 | 2.9 |
The 4-cylinder must be worked hard most all the time, even with manual shift. The six delivers good go with either transmission, though it doesn't make a hot rod of the 3000-pound Wrangler.
FUEL ECONOMY
| SE, 4 cyl man. | Sport/Sahara, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.8 |
It isn't great. We averaged 15.2 mpg in our last test of a 5-speed Sahara, just slightly better than we get with the 4-cylinder.
RIDE QUALITY
| SE, 4 cyl man. | Sport/Sahara, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 2.7 |
Wrangler isn't the oxcart it once was, but a short wheelbase and off-road-ready suspension trigger abrupt vertical ride motions even on apparently smooth roads.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| SE, 4 cyl man. | Sport/Sahara, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 3.5 |
What makes for a bouncy ride also makes for skittish cornering on bumpy surfaces. The steering isn't very precise either. At least Wrangler is very maneuverable on-road and off.
QUIETNESS
| SE, 4 cyl man. | Sport/Sahara, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 2.4 |
Sound insulation is sparse, so wind noise is deafening in the convertible even with the top up. It's less brutal with the hardtop, but that only allows copious tire noise to drum through.
CONTROLS
| SE, 4 cyl man. | Sport/Sahara, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 4.4 |
Wrangler's dash has logically grouped gauges and controls that are easy to reach.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| SE, 4 cyl man. | Sport/Sahara, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.4 |
Head room is terrific with either top, and the chair-height seats are comfortable, but occupants sit rather close together. Entry/exit requires a big step over an intrusive doorsill.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| SE, 4 cyl man. | Sport/Sahara, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | 2.9 |
Two adults fit without touching shoulders, but knee room is tight. The bench seat itself almost belongs in a park.
CARGO ROOM
| SE, 4 cyl man. | Sport/Sahara, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6.6 |
A few grocery bags fit behind the back seat, which folds or removes for steamer-trunk space. The soft top is a time-consuming tussle to raise or lower. The hardtop is just as difficult to remove.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| SE, 4 cyl man. | Sport/Sahara, auto. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 3.8 |
Wrangler isn't comfortable, but few vehicles have more personality or better off-road ability. Six-cylinder models can quickly top $20,000, but all versions have strong resale value.
