Vehicle Highlights
Two-wheel-drive Grand Cherokees are available with a V8 engine for 2000, keynoting the changes to Jeep's flagship SUV. Grand Cherokee comes in Laredo and Limited models, both with a 6-cylinder engine or optional V8. Both use a 4-speed automatic transmission, though the V8's has an extra gear ratio between second and third gears designed to improve passing response and provide smoother downshifts.
Rear-wheel drive had been exclusive to 6-cylinder models, but now both engines come with rear-drive or one of three 4WD systems, all of which are usable on dry pavement. Selec-Trac provides 2WD or full-time 4WD; it's now available with the V8 after being limited to the six. Permanently engaged Quadra-Trac II apportions power between front and rear axles. Quadra-Drive is also permanently engaged, but can send 100 percent of the engine's power to any one wheel to maintain traction. Standard front seat-belt pretensioners, sun-visor extensions, and a "Headlights On" indicator are other new features.
COMPETITION
This is by far the hottest market segment right now. Crowded with more than 20 vehicles, midsize SUVs vary in size and type but nearly all seat five adults and offer V6 or V8 engines. Our Best Buys include the Ford Explorer, the Lexus RX 300, and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. Explorer and M-Class are more traditional SUVs with full off-road capability and V6 and V8 engines. RX 300 is a car-based SUV that lacks a low range in 4WD mode, but is the most carlike to drive.
Our Recommended choices are all traditional SUVs: the Dodge Durango, which offers optional third-row seating; the slightly more expensive Explorer clone Mercury Mountaineer; the utilitarian Nissan Xterra; and the refined but expensive Toyota 4Runner.
If you are on a Budget take a look at the old standby Jeep Cherokee. It is cruder than the rest but offers go-anywhere ability, utility, and a low price.
