ACCELERATION
| Laredo 4WD w/Quadra Drive, I6 | Limited 4WD, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 6 | 4.4 |
Lively with the 6-cylinder, robust with the V8. Quadra-Drive, however, suffers occasional drivetrain binding in tight, low-speed turns. And there was a pronounced shudder through one V8 test model's Quadra-Drive powertrain when coming to a stop.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Laredo 4WD w/Quadra Drive, I6 | Limited 4WD, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 3 | 3.6 |
Our extended-use-test 6-cylinder 4WD Laredo is averaging 14.6 mpg; other test 6-cylinder Grand Cherokees averaged 15.9 mpg, which is more representative of the typical midsize SUV. Test V8 models averaged 16.1 mpg with lots of highway driving and just 12.7 in mostly city work.
RIDE QUALITY
| Laredo 4WD w/Quadra Drive, I6 | Limited 4WD, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 3.7 |
The suspension easily absorbs most bumps and potholes, it generates queasy side-to-side and fore-and-aft pitching motions over uneven pavement.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Laredo 4WD w/Quadra Drive, I6 | Limited 4WD, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 3.6 |
Good balance and control in even quick directional changes despite a fair amount of body lean. However, small steering corrections are needed at highway speeds.
QUIETNESS
| Laredo 4WD w/Quadra Drive, I6 | Limited 4WD, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 3.6 |
Engines are well-muffled, but wind rush and tire roar can intrude at highway speeds. And Quadra-Drive generate lots of gear whine.
CONTROLS
| Laredo 4WD w/Quadra Drive, I6 | Limited 4WD, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6 |
Easy-to-use radio and climate controls are mounted close to the driver. The 4WD transfer-case lever is handy, too. Rear wiper and headlight switches are on column stalks.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Laredo 4WD w/Quadra Drive, I6 | Limited 4WD, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 5.9 |
Adults get plenty of space on comfortable seats.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Laredo 4WD w/Quadra Drive, I6 | Limited 4WD, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.3 |
Not wide enough to seat three adults comfortably in the rear, and the seatback is too upright. Leg room is unimpressive, and toe space it tight. Back-seat entry and exit is hampered by narrow rear door bottoms.
CARGO ROOM
| Laredo 4WD w/Quadra Drive, I6 | Limited 4WD, V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 7.5 |
Though adequate, space is at the low end for this class, and most SUVs have easier-to-fold rear seatbacks.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Laredo 4WD w/Quadra Drive, I6 | Limited 4WD, V8 | Class Average |

Performance and overall design are good, and prices are competitive. But questions about the long-term mechanical reliability of this line of Jeeps keeps Grand Cherokee from the Best Buy category. Our extended-use test of a Laredo will help address those concerns.
