2000 Jaguar XK8 Review
Jaguar adds a supercharged high-performance model and an optional satellite navigation system to its XK line for 2000. These 4-passenger luxury sports cars offer a coupe body style or a convertible with a power soft top and glass rear window with defroster.
All XKs use a 4.0-liter V8. XK8 models have 290 horsepower, the XKR adds a supercharger for 370 hp, plus functional hood louvers and a rear spoiler. A 5-speed automatic is the only transmission. All XKs have standard antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, but get larger-diameter rotors for 2000, and the XKR's 18-inch wheels are newly optional in place of the XK8's standard 17s. Traction control is standard, but this year it uses the previously optional design that modulates throttle and brakes. This replaces the throttle-only system that was standard last year. The XKR has different alloy wheels, a functional louvered hood, and a rear spoiler, plus Jaguar's Computer Active Technology Suspension (computer-controlled shock absorbers). The satellite navigation system operates from a touch-screen display mounted in the dash and uses CD-ROMs to provide mapping for various regions.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range. It covers everything from the $33,000 Saab 9-5 to the $128,000 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $42,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. In the same vein, the more-expensive Lexus LS 400 continues to impress, excelling in every way except for handling. If you are looking for something a bit more sporting we recommend the BMW 5-Series, Jaguar S-Type, or Lexus GS 300/400. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the new Cadillac DeVille or Mercedes-Benz CLK.
News
The XK8 will get a 2-seat companion sometime in 2002, likely priced in the $40,000-$50,000 bracket. Called F-Type, it is said to be a takeoff of the like-named concept car that wowed crowds at the 2000 Detroit Auto Show. The showroom version will be the first true Jaguar sports car since the legendary E-type went out of production in the early 1970s. Few details are currently available, but the F-Type will likely be built on a cut-down version of the platform used for Jaguar's S-Type sedan and the Lincoln LS. That means rear-wheel drive, though the platform will accept an all-wheel-drive powertrain. Insiders say the standard engine will be the 240-horsepower V6 used in the base S-Type, with an available 300-hp supercharged version possible. However, we think it more plausible that the F-Type will use the forthcoming 4.2-liter enlargement of Jaguar's 4.0 "AJ8" V8, if only to keep the car "pure Jaguar," as the S-Type V6 is based on the mass-market Ford "Duratec" unit. We also expect a standard 5-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift capability, but a full manual, perhaps a 5-speed, could well be offered too.
Assuming the Detroit concept car is an accurate forecast, F-Type styling should be very rounded and curvy in the classic E-type mold, matched by a "retro modern" cockpit. The concept was about the size of a Porsche Boxster or Audi TT, but dimensions will probably be enlarged a bit to provide more passenger and cargo space.
As for the XK8, it should see no major change for the next few years, but it's almost certain to adopt the larger 4.2-liter V8 being prepared for Jaguar's new-generation XJ sedans, which arrive in late 2002. Jaguar is also working on an even larger 4.5-liter V8 for a stretched 2004-model XJ sedan, and this could also find its way into the XK8, with a supercharged version an outside possibility.

Acceleration

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
7 8 7.4

Even supercharged models don't vault away from a stop, but all build speed quickly and smoothly. Jaguar claims the XK8s can run 0-60 mph in less than 7 seconds, while XKRs take less than 5.5 seconds--figures we believe.
Fuel Economy

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
4 4 4.7

Mileage is a low priority for most luxury buyers, but for the record, our test XK8 convertible averaged 15 mpg on premium.
Ride Quality

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
6 6 3.4

Calibrated for comfort. XKRs have tauter suspensions, but all ride comfortably on most any surface.
Steering/Handling/Braking

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
6 7 7.6

XKRs feature Jaguar's Computer Active Technology Suspension, which alleviates some of the floatiness of the base setup. While entertaining enough, these near-two-ton cats don't have sports car moves.
Quietness

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
5 5 3.6

Jaguar's V8 is nearly silent at idle. Supercharged models add a whine to the V8's muted growl, but it's never annoying. Wind and tire noise are low too, even in the ragtop.
Controls

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
5 5 5.1

Ford owns Jaguar, and the American company's professionalism shows in the attractive XK dash with its logically designed switches and large, legible gauges.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
4 4 4.7

Seats are comfortably huggy, but a bulky center console, narrow footwells, and shallow side glass make even medium-size adults feel cramped. Entry/exit requires a deep-crouched step over wide sills.
Room/Comfort (rear)

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
1 1 .7

The back seat in either model is shaped and sized only for two toddlers, so use it for cargo instead--as you may need to.
Cargo Room

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average
2 2 2.2

There's not much unless you count the back seat. The coupe trunk has 11.1 cubic feet on paper but not in practice. The convertible has only 9.5.
Value within Class

XK8 conv XKR cpe Class Average

The XKs offer refined performance in an elegant, luxurious package brimming with traditional Jaguar charm. It also seems to be the best-built Jag ever, and it's competitively priced, all things considered.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
