ACCELERATION

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
7 6 8 6.4

Even without supercharging, the silky V8 moves these two-ton cars with authority, aided by a quick, positive automatic transmission. Supercharged models are luxury hot rods.

FUEL ECONOMY

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
4 4 3 4.3

A test Vanden Plas averaged 15.5 mpg on the required premium fuel. It would do better in gentler driving. Supercharged models are thirstier, especially with a heavy right foot.

RIDE QUALITY

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
8 10 7 7.5

Cushy and compliant, upset by only the biggest bumps and pavement heaves. Rough-pavement wheel patter and rumble afflict the bigger-tired, more firmly damped XJR.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
6 6 7 5.9

Quick and precise steering, but so-so stability in crosswinds. XJR is flat and grippy in corners, but the others show marked lean before taking a set and confidently carving through.

QUIETNESS

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
9 9 7 7.7

Quiet cats all, with minimal wind and road noise. Some whiney supercharger moan is evident when going full bore in the XJR and Vanden Plas Supercharged.

CONTROLS

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
3 3 3 5.5

Gauges are clear and well placed, but too many minor controls aren't. Jaguar's "J-gate" transmission selector permits manual shifting, but lever action is somewhat imprecise.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
5 5 5 7.6

Even shorter folk can't wear more than a baseball cap. Front footwells are long, but narrow and confined-feeling. At least the seats are arm-chair relaxing.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
5 7 5 6.8

Head room is again tight despite a seat cushion set too low for comfort. Leg space is limited in XJ8 and XJR, almost generous in the long models. Entry/exit demands crouching in any XJ.

CARGO ROOM

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
2 2 2 4.4

Trunk height is limited by the trim tail styling, so cargo volume is subpar for the class. At least the hold has a regular shape and low load sill.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

XJ8 XJ8L/Vanden Plas XJR Class Average
3 3 3 3.8

The XJs boast top-notch ride and quietness, plus potent V8s and excellent handling. If you're unfazed by the problematic rear-seat accommodations and limited cargo space, these Jaguars are attractive alternatives to more staid luxury sedans like the Lexus LS 400 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
