Vehicle Highlights

Jaguar's smaller sedan gets minor trim changes following its introduction as a 2000 model in spring '99. Jaguar is part of Ford, and the rear-wheel-drive S-Type shares its platform with the Lincoln LS, though the S-Type is built in Britain with mostly Jaguar-specific components.
The 3.0 model has a 3.0-liter V6 derived from a Ford design. The S-Type 4.0 uses a 4.0-liter Jaguar V8. The Lincoln LS shares versions of these engines. The only transmission is a Ford/Jaguar 5-speed automatic. Standard are traction control, antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, and front head/chest side airbags. Options include a Weather Package with Jaguar's antiskid Dynamic Stability Control, and a Sport Package that features Jaguar's Computer Active Technology Suspension (computer-controlled shock absorbers) absorbers and 17-inch wheels with high-speed tires. A Deluxe Communications Package adds an in-dash navigation display, satellite/cell-phone assistance system, and voice-activated control for telephone, audio, and climate functions. Also optional is Reverse Park Control, which sounds an alert as the car backs toward an obstacle.
Running additions include a trunk pull-down strap, redesigned alloy wheels, and redundant radio controls on the steering wheel. Also, the front door armrests and center console lid are raised slightly and their height equalized.

COMPETITION

This diverse segment offers the widest price range. It covers everything from the $33,000 Saab 9-5 to the $128,000 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $42,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. In the same vein, the more-expensive Lexus LS 400 continues to impress, excelling in every way except for handling.
If you are looking for something a bit more sporting we recommend the BMW 5-Series, Jaguar S-Type, or Lexus GS 300/400. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the new Cadillac DeVille or Mercedes-Benz CLK.
