ACCELERATION

3.0 4.0 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
5 6 6.2

Jaguar says the V6 S-Type does 0-60 mph in 8 seconds, the V8 in 6.6. Those are good numbers, and they ring true after our initial testing. However, the automatic transmission has a tendency toward slow downshifts and erratic gear changes in hard driving.

FUEL ECONOMY

3.0 4.0 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
4 4 4.6

Our V6 test car averaged 19.5 mpg. We haven't measured fuel economy with a V8 version, but both engines require premium fuel.

RIDE QUALITY

3.0 4.0 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
6 5 6.5

As expected of Jaguars, the base suspension delivers a plush, supple ride with excellent bump absorption, though large bumps induce a trace of float. Ride quality suffers little with the Sport Package.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

3.0 4.0 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
6 6 6.3

Body lean is modest in fast corners, where the car inspires confidence. Steering is quick and informative. The Sport Package sharpens those reflexes and provides wider tires with still more grip.

QUIETNESS

3.0 4.0 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
7 6 6.8

Both engines are smooth and hushed, emitting an expensive-sounding growl when worked hard. Wind and road noise are subdued, though tire noise is more pronounced with the Sport Package.

CONTROLS

3.0 4.0 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
4 4 6.2

The all-button audio and climate controls are handy but busy; add the optional navigator and the center dash gets complex. The voice-activation system may simplify your life, but it's part of a pricey $4300 option package.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

3.0 4.0 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
6 6 6.9

Ambience is cozy, though hardly cramped, and seats are comfortable.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

3.0 4.0 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
4 4 5.1

Six-footers have decent head and leg clearance, but the low cushion dictates a knees-up seating position. The seat is properly firm and contoured. Three adults can fit, but it's a squeeze.

CARGO ROOM

3.0 4.0 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
3 3 3.9

Not a Jaguar priority. The trunk is small by class standards, but usefully shaped and easy to load.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

3.0 4.0 w/Sport Pkg. Class Average
3 3 4.1

Go easy on options to keep prices relatively reasonable, and the S-Type is worth considering as an upper-crust sedan. Its principal attraction is traditional Jaguar styling, and while it doesn't lack for modern engineering, the examples we've tested have fallen short of the assembly-quality standards set by rivals from Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
