ACCELERATION
| Base w/Ironman Pkg. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 2.9 |
Strong at all speeds, but around-town response is best when the automatic transmission is kept in third gear.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base w/Ironman Pkg. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 4.8 |
Our test VehiCross averaged 14.7 mpg.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base w/Ironman Pkg. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 2.7 |
Little harshness over most bumps, but the short wheelbase makes the ride choppy.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base w/Ironman Pkg. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 5 | 3.5 |
A high point: accurate steering, plus good grip and balance in turns, without excessive body lean.
QUIETNESS
| Base w/Ironman Pkg. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 2.4 |
The V6 is coarse-sounding, and, in our tests, there was lots of intrusive gear whine and a wind leak from the driver's window.
CONTROLS
| Base w/Ironman Pkg. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 4.4 |
Gauges are unobstructed, but control placement is somewhat haphazard, with a long reach to the radio and climate switches.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base w/Ironman Pkg. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 4.4 |
Roomy, and the seats are comfortable and supportive. But entry/exit is tricky in front or back: the tall ride height and low roofline make for an awkward combination of climbing and stooping.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base w/Ironman Pkg. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 2.9 |
Lots of rear knee clearance, but the back cushion is low to the floor, forcing a legs-out seating position.
CARGO ROOM
| Base w/Ironman Pkg. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6.6 |
Hard-to-reach releases make it difficult to fold the rear seat. Cargo area is small for an SUV, with only a narrow area behind the rear seatbacks.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base w/Ironman Pkg. | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 1 | 3.8 |
It has satisfying performance, but VehiCross is an answer to a question no one has asked. Priced against roomier, more traditional 4-door SUVs, any value it has is emotional, not rational.
