Hombre's 4-cylinder engine performs best with the manual transmission, providing adequate acceleration in light-duty chores. Saddling it with the automatic slows things considerably, so if you want the self-shifter or will be hauling heavy loads, opt for a V6.

We averaged 19.1 mpg in a 2WD V6 SpaceCab in an even mix of city and highway driving. In mostly city driving we averaged only 14.6 mpg with a 4WD V6.

Isuzu doesn't offer the selection of suspension choices on its pickups that GM does. Our test vehicle seemed to have settings that were on the soft side for a pickup, as the ride was quite smooth--and it improved with a bit of a load in the cargo bed.

Handling was likewise impressive, with moderate body lean in turns. Some previous versions of these trucks had spongy brake pedals, but this one was firmer and drew no complaints.

Gauges are unobstructed, and soft-touch rotary knobs for the climate system and large radio buttons enhance the simple control layout.

The center console contains dual cupholders and several covered and open bins, and there are map pockets in the door panels. There are lots of hard plastic surfaces inside that don't look rich, so the interior rates as stark but functional.

There's little to recommend Isuzu's pickup over the similar Chevy and GMC versions, unless you like the styling better or find the option assortment more to your taste. All stack up well against the competition.
