Vehicle Highlights

Because Nissan's Maxima is redesigned for 2000, so is Infiniti's upscale version. However, the latest I30 offers some features Maxima doesn't, plus its own, more conservative styling. Like the 2000 Maxima, I30 is 2 inches longer in wheelbase and 4.1 inches overall (it's also 3.2 inches longer than the Nissan). Rear leg room increases nearly 2 inches. Revisions to the familiar V6 engine increase horsepower by 37, to 227 (5 more than Maxima offers). The only transmission is now 4-speed automatic; manual shift has been dropped.
Base and sportier I30t Touring models return. Standard front head/chest side airbags are joined by active front head restraints designed to minimize whiplash injury. Standard antilock 4-wheel disc brakes remain, as does optional traction control packaged with heated front seats.
Expected to account for about 25 percent of sales, the I30t gets a firmer suspension with 17-inch wheels in place of 16s. Both models have standard power sunroof, power rear-window sunshade (unavailable on Maxima), leather upholstery, automatic climate control, and remote keyless entry. A cell phone/satellite navigation and assistance system is optional.

COMPETITION

This hotly contested segment has a clear benchmark, it is the Acura TL (and its 2-door cousin Acura CL). The TL succeeds in blending comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price. But the Acura's not for everyone. We also recommend the sporty and Euro-flavored Audi A6, the comfortable Buick Park Avenue, the affordable and fast Infiniti I30, and the luxury-orientated Lexus ES 300.
