ACCELERATION
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 8 | 5.7 |
Surprisingly powerful at low engine speeds, but its race-car personality shows only above 5000 rpm.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 6 | 6.2 |
Our test S2000 averaged 23.2 mpg on required premium fuel.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 2 | 3.2 |
Performance-car stiff but not harsh.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 10 | 6.8 |
A driving pleasure, with balanced, grippy handling and excellent steering feel.
QUIETNESS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 1 | 3 |
Tire and wind roar are abundant, and the engine is loud and raspy at higher engine speeds.
CONTROLS
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 5.4 |
The audio system's main buttons are too small, but redundant controls flank the steering wheel. Unique dashboard layout is otherwise good.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 3 | 4.2 |
Comfortable seats, with good head and leg room even for tall occupants.
CARGO ROOM
| Base | Class Average |
|---|---|
| 1 | 2.8 |
Small trunk is usefully shaped and fairly deep, but the only covered interior storage is an awkwardly-placed bin between the seats.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base | Class Average |

Honda says the S2000 was designed for the track as much as the road, and raceworthy handling is by far the major asset. But most owners don't race, so the high noise, hard ride, and high-strung engine are real drawbacks for day-to-day livability. The price is no steal either, and limited production means probable markups, not markdowns. Overall, the S2000 is too specialized for a road car and thus rather disappointing. For a more cultured and user-friendly roadster, we recommend BMW's similarly priced Z3 2.3 or, for less money, Mazda's evergreen Miata.
