ACCELERATION

LX 2WD, auto. EX-L, auto. Class Average
4 4 4.4

The twincam V6 has decent power for the class, and the automatic transmission helps performance at any speed with smooth upshifts and prompt downshifts.

FUEL ECONOMY

LX 2WD, auto. EX-L, auto. Class Average
3 3 3.6

Too bad mileage is mediocre, our most recent 4WD Rodeo returning only 15.8 mpg overall in admittedly hard test driving.

RIDE QUALITY

LX 2WD, auto. EX-L, auto. Class Average
2 2 3.7

The suspension provides a decent ride, though small imperfections do register, larger ones aren't absorbed that well, and the ride can be jittery on rough pavement.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

LX 2WD, auto. EX-L, auto. Class Average
4 4 3.6

Handling is only mid-pack, with plenty of body lean and tire squeal in tight turns.

QUIETNESS

LX 2WD, auto. EX-L, auto. Class Average
4 4 3.6

Engine and road noise are high, even for an SUV.

CONTROLS

LX 2WD, auto. EX-L, auto. Class Average
6 6 6

Drivers enjoy a mostly well designed dash, though climate and audio controls are a bit distant for easy access. Forward visibility is a high point, thanks to a low cowl and hood line, but the optional outside spare interferes directly aft.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

LX 2WD, auto. EX-L, auto. Class Average
6 6 5.9

Passports provide comfortable space for two adults, up front.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

LX 2WD, auto. EX-L, auto. Class Average
4 4 4.3

Rear passengers have plenty of head room, but there' s little foot or knee room if the front seats are all the way back. Step-in is a little lower than the compact-SUV norm, so getting in or out is no great chore, but the rear doors are narrow at the bottom and could open wider.

CARGO ROOM

LX 2WD, auto. EX-L, auto. Class Average
8 8 7.5

We're not sold on the side-opening tailgate. Not only must the rear window be raised first, a metal safety catch must be released to free the tailgate for closing--all rather clumsy when your arms are full.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

LX 2WD, auto. EX-L, auto. Class Average
3 3 3.8

Passport (Rodeo too) is a strong, competent mainstream SUV, but it has no unique features to sell and trails most rivals for refinement and 4-wheel-drive versatility. It does possess a slightly sportier nature, but that's not enough to justify prices that are rather high for what you get.
