ACCELERATION
| LX | EX w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 3.6 |
Spirited for a minivan, but the transmission is slow to downshift, hampering response in city driving. Our test EX did 0-60 mph in just over 9 seconds.
FUEL ECONOMY
| LX | EX w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 3.9 |
We averaged 18.6 mpg with lots of highway miles, 16.8 mpg in hard city/freeway driving. Honda recommends premium fuel, but says regular will cause only a slight loss of power.
RIDE QUALITY
| LX | EX w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 4.9 |
When lightly loaded, big bumps jolt and there's marked wheel patter on pavement breaks. But with some weight, Odyssey absorbs most rough stuff with fine comfort and control.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| LX | EX w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 4.3 |
Smooth and balanced in turns. Steering is slightly heavy at low speeds but quickly becomes light and communicative.
QUIETNESS
| LX | EX w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 4.5 |
Engine is smooth and quiet. Wind noise is low, but the tires rumble and the body drums on rough pavement.
CONTROLS
| LX | EX w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 5 | 5.7 |
Generally good, but the shifter tends to go past Drive when moving from Park, and also blocks the driver's reach to some audio controls.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| LX | EX w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6 |
Spacious on wide, supportive seats. Between the front buckets is a handy tray table that folds to provide walk-through access to the rear seats.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| LX | EX w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 6.4 |
Second-row passengers get plenty of room, and we like the bench/bucket format. But the third-row bench is a squeeze for three adults, and its leg room is tight with the second row seats back.
CARGO ROOM
| LX | EX w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 10 | 9.3 |
Okay with the rear seat up, generous with it down. "Space-saver" spare tire stores in a covered well in front of the middle-row seats.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| LX | EX w/nav. sys. | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | 8 | 5.8 |
It's not perfect, but Honda's minivan is a solid Best Buy: roomy, refined, reasonably priced, and a fine performer. No wonder it's been a virtual sell-out.
