ACCELERATION

LX 4WD, man. SE 4WD Class Average
4 3 2.9

Adequate, but the automatic transmission makes for sluggish standing starts and passing. Our test manual transmission 4WD CR-V did 0-60 mph in 9.3 seconds; the automatic is not as quick.

FUEL ECONOMY

LX 4WD, man. SE 4WD Class Average
6 6 4.8

Our test '99 manual-shift EX averaged a respectable 22.5 mpg.

RIDE QUALITY

LX 4WD, man. SE 4WD Class Average
5 5 2.7

The CR-V is based on Honda's Civic car chassis, so ride comfort is good, although undulations and freeway expansion joints cause annoying hop.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

LX 4WD, man. SE 4WD Class Average
5 5 3.5

Steering is inert on-center but precise for an SUV. Body lean is modest, and the CR-V drives much like any small wagon.

QUIETNESS

LX 4WD, man. SE 4WD Class Average
4 4 2.4

Wind and tire noise are low, but engine drone can be tiresome at highway speeds.

CONTROLS

LX 4WD, man. SE 4WD Class Average
8 8 4.4

Well laid out, except for the wiper stalk, which gets in the way of the automatic's column shifter.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

LX 4WD, man. SE 4WD Class Average
6 6 4.4

Roomy for the exterior size. Generous head and leg room.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

LX 4WD, man. SE 4WD Class Average
5 5 2.9

Too narrow for three adults, but there's good head and leg room. Step-in height is reasonable despite 8-inch ground clearance, but entry/exit can be tight through small rear doors.

CARGO ROOM

LX 4WD, man. SE 4WD Class Average
7 7 6.6

The 50/50 split rear seat double-folds to form a flat load floor. But with it up there's only space behind for a row of grocery bags.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

LX 4WD, man. SE 4WD Class Average
8 8 3.8

CR-V is America's best-selling compact SUV, although there's new competition in the enlarged 2001 RAV4 and especially from Escape and Tribute. Some buyers might wish for a stronger, quieter engine, others for more off-road brawn than CR-V offers, but with its smart, efficient design, this Honda is sensible, handy, and easy to like.
