ACCELERATION

CX hatch, man. HX cpe, auto. DX sdn, auto. EX sdn, auto. Class Average
3 3 4 5 3.7

All Civics are at least adequate, and the Si is quick.

FUEL ECONOMY

CX hatch, man. HX cpe, auto. DX sdn, auto. EX sdn, auto. Class Average
7 7 7 6 6.6

Our automatic DX hatchback test car averaged 29.1 mpg. An automatic EX test sedan averaged 25.8 mpg. Our test Si averaged 26 mpg on required premium fuel; other models use regular.

RIDE QUALITY

CX hatch, man. HX cpe, auto. DX sdn, auto. EX sdn, auto. Class Average
3 3 5 5 3.5

There's some choppiness on freeways, especially in the firm Si, but Civic's smooth, absorbent ride sets the small-car standard.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

CX hatch, man. HX cpe, auto. DX sdn, auto. EX sdn, auto. Class Average
4 4 4 4 4.3

Skinny tires compromise grip and control on lower-end models, but Civics are otherwise nimble and fun to drive, especially the racy Si.

QUIETNESS

CX hatch, man. HX cpe, auto. DX sdn, auto. EX sdn, auto. Class Average
4 4 4 4 3.6

Wind rush is low, but engine noise intrudes at high rpm, and road noise is prominent on coarse pavement.

CONTROLS

CX hatch, man. HX cpe, auto. DX sdn, auto. EX sdn, auto. Class Average
8 8 8 8 5.5

A model of simple, intuitive design.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

CX hatch, man. HX cpe, auto. DX sdn, auto. EX sdn, auto. Class Average
4 4 4 4 4.2

Based on interior volume, sedans are compacts while hatchbacks and coupes are subcompacts. All are roomy, considering their exterior size.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

CX hatch, man. HX cpe, auto. DX sdn, auto. EX sdn, auto. Class Average
2 2 3 3 2.8

Enough space for people up to about 6-feet tall, but there's not much leg room with the front seats back, and rear entry/exit is tight, even on sedans.

CARGO ROOM

CX hatch, man. HX cpe, auto. DX sdn, auto. EX sdn, auto. Class Average
5 2 2 2 3.3

Trunks are efficiently spacious and a split-fold rear seatback expands cargo capacity on all models.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

CX hatch, man. HX cpe, auto. DX sdn, auto. EX sdn, auto. Class Average
7 7 9 9 4.2

These Hondas are far from the cheapest subcompacts, but they're very practical, they top the charts for refinement, and they offer plenty of driving fun. Add a proven record of reliability, durability, and high resale value, and any Civic rates as a Best Buy.
