Both Accord engines are silky, revvy, quiet, and punchy. We timed a 5-speed 4-cylinder EX at 8.5 seconds to 60 mph, a V6 EX sedan at 7.6. However, Accord's automatic transmission sometimes shifts with a jolt and can be painfully slow to downshift for passing.

Typical of Hondas, economy is good. Our extended-use 4-cylinder manual coupe returned 23.8 mpg over more than 8100 city/highway miles. We've also averaged 24.7 mpg with an automatic 4-cylinder sedan and between 20.7-24 mpg with V6 sedans.

Ride is firm but comfortable and controlled.

Accords are capable handlers, too, with precise steering and fine balance, though ultimate cornering grip is modest on 4-cylinder models because of relatively narrow tires. Braking is short, quick, and stable, though one V6 test sedan suffered unusually heavy nosedive in simulated panic stops.
QUIETNESS

Wind rush is modest, but tire hum intrudes on coarse pavement and overall noise suppression is only average. Accords impress as solid and carefully constructed.

Accord's dashboard design is very user-friendly, although the power window and lock switches aren't illuminated, and the ill-defined detent between the automatic transmission's top two gears may have many drivers cruising in third instead of fourth.

Seat comfort itself is first-rate, especially up front. Outward vision is good except over-the-shoulder, where a high parcel shelf inhibits sightlines.

Rear seat room is about par for the class. Adequate for two large adults, three is a squeeze for everyone.

Interior storage space is decent, and both body styles have wide, flat-floor trunks. Liftover is a bit high in coupes, which also have slightly less cargo volume.

Accord is a must-see midsize: roomy, very well built from top-grade materials, and with road manners a cut above the family-car norm. Demand is strong, so don't expect much discounting, but reliability and resale value are terrific.
