ACCELERATION

SLS 2WD SLT 4WD Class Average
5 5 4.4

Though Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, and Jeep Grand Cherokee all offer V8s, GM's 4.3 V6 provides more than adequate performance except in the heaviest towing chores.

FUEL ECONOMY

SLS 2WD SLT 4WD Class Average
4 4 3.6

Fuel economy is no bargain. We logged 16.4 mpg with a 4WD Jimmy over 725 miles, about half of which was on expressways. That's about average for compact V6 SUVs.

RIDE QUALITY

SLS 2WD SLT 4WD Class Average
3 4 3.7

No direct competitor matches the GM brands' overall ride quality. The best blend of comfort and control comes with GMC's Luxury Ride Suspension, which is standard on Envoy and the Diamond Edition and available on 4-door Jimmys.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

SLS 2WD SLT 4WD Class Average
3 3 3.6

Jimmy feels stable and controlled most of the time, but poor brakes and copious body lean limit driving appeal.

QUIETNESS

SLS 2WD SLT 4WD Class Average
3 3 3.6

Slightly noisier than most of the SUV competition, especially when the engine is cold.

CONTROLS

SLS 2WD SLT 4WD Class Average
6 6 6

Simple and logical. Interior controls main downfall are poor assembly quality and crude-feeling switchgear.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

SLS 2WD SLT 4WD Class Average
5 5 5.9

Like Blazers, these GMCs have ample room for four adults, though the front footwells are rather narrow and 2-door models are less accommodating in back than 4-doors.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

SLS 2WD SLT 4WD Class Average
2 3 4.3

Rear seatbacks in both body styles are short, hard, and uncomfortable. Step-in height is low, but narrow rear entryways impede access even in 4-doors.

CARGO ROOM

SLS 2WD SLT 4WD Class Average
7 7 7.5

A standard split rear seat folds easily to increase cargo space, but the GM models trail Explorer for outright load volume. We prefer the liftgate to the tailgate because it makes for a shorter reach to items in the forward end of the cargo area.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

SLS 2WD SLT 4WD Class Average
2 4 3.8

Jimmy and Envoy earn points for their ride comfort, strong V6, versatile AutoTrac 4WD, and attractive price. Overall, though, these are aging vehicles that don't quite measure up to the best in class.
