ACCELERATION

LSi Base LSi Class Average
2 1 2 3.7

Three-cylinder Metros are grossly underpowered and 4-cylinder models work hard to keep up with traffic.

FUEL ECONOMY

LSi Base LSi Class Average
7 9 7 6.6

Our 25.8-mpg average in city and suburban commuting with an automatic-transmission LSi 4-door wasn't great for a car sold on the promise of high fuel economy.

RIDE QUALITY

LSi Base LSi Class Average
2 1 2 3.5

Metro's light weight and modest dimensions are evident in the way bumps jar the suspension and create kickback through the steering wheel.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

LSi Base LSi Class Average
2 2 2 4.3

Metro is agile around town, but the skinny tires quickly run out of grip in high-speed turns.

QUIETNESS

LSi Base LSi Class Average
2 2 2 3.6

Road noise is high, and there's lots of wind roar and mechanical ruckus.

CONTROLS

LSi Base LSi Class Average
3 3 3 5.5

No gauges are obstructed and the dashboard puts controls where they're easy to see and reach.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

LSi Base LSi Class Average
2 2 3 4.2

Adults have good leg room and surprisingly spacious head room. The seats are firm and have no excess padding.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

LSi Base LSi Class Average
2 2 2 2.8

Two children is the practical limit in the hatchback. The sedan accommodates medium-size adults. Rear seat entry and exit is difficult in both body styles.

CARGO ROOM

LSi Base LSi Class Average
6 6 2 3.3

Cargo space is slightly better than average for cars in this class, but the sedan's trunk opening is small.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

LSi Base LSi Class Average
2 2 2 4.2

Despite budget-grade interior trim and lots of hard plastic, the Metros we've tested were solidly put together and had better paint and detail workmanship than some costlier subcompacts. Still, Metro is worth considering only if low purchase price is a must. Even then, a larger, more substantial car--even a used one--is a smarter choice in the long run.
