Vehicle Highlights
Adjustable gas and brake pedals and a rear-seat video system are new options for 2000 on Ford's minivan. Windstar offers base, LX, SE, SEL, and Limited models. Base and LX come with a 3.0-liter V6. A 3.8-liter V6 is a no-cost option for the LX and a $685 accessory on the base model. The 3.8 is standard on SE, SEL, and Limited. All have automatic transmission.
Dual sliding doors are optional on base and LX, standard elsewhere. Power operation for both side doors is standard on SEL and Limited and optional on SE. Power operation for just the passenger-side door is optional on LX and SE. Antilock brakes are standard. Traction control and head/chest front side airbags are included on Limited, optional on other Windstars.
All seat seven. The 3-passenger third-row bench can be used as the second-row seat. And on base and LX versions, the second-row bench mounts on the left or right side of the vehicle. Other models come with two second-row buckets. Standard on Limited and optional on other 4-door models is a reverse sensing system that sounds a warning of obstacles while backing up.
Adjustable pedals that power fore and aft over a 4-inch span are standard on Limited and optional on XL, SE, and SEL. Optional on models with second-row buckets is a rear-seat entertainment system that includes a VCR and flip-down 6.4-inch LCD TV screen. A Sport option package for LX models sold in the Midwest and Northeast includes a rear spoiler, unique interior and exterior graphics, and 16-inch painted alloy wheels. Windstar also comes as a 3-door cargo version.
COMPETITION
Chrysler started the minivan trend back in 1984, and they remain one of our Best Buys today. Though the competition has heated up, we still feel that the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Voyager are two of the best you can buy. They offer all of the creature comforts in a pleasing package at a fair price. Our other Best Buy is the Honda Odyssey. It's a little bit smaller than the Chryslers, but more sporty to drive, and it has a super-convenient flip-and-fold-away rear seat.
Trailing at a close second are the Recommended Chevy Venture and Ford Windstar. Though these vans are comparably priced and offer loads of neat features, we feel they can't match the road manners of our Best Buys.
