2000 Ford Mustang Review
Midyear introduction of an appearance option package for the GT model makes news for Mustang. Base and GT models come as coupes or as convertibles with a power top and glass rear window. Ford suspended production of the limited-edition, high-performance Cobra model for the 2000 model year; it's to return for 2001.
Base Mustangs have a 190-hp V6, GTs a 260-hp single-overhead-cam V8. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, automatic is optional, as is traction control. Both models have 4-wheel disc brakes; antilock control is standard on GT, optional on the base Mustang.
New for 2000 are two rear child-seat anchors and tri-color front fender emblems. Base versions are available with new 6-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels and, for the first time, with the same 16-inch alloys and tire size used on the GT. Also new for V6 models is a Sport appearance group with rear spoiler, bright alloys, and body stripes. The midyear GT package adds a special hood and side scoops, body graphics, and the Cobra's 17-inch wheels and tires.
Competition
This class features an interesting mix of hard-core performance models and more luxurious touring convertibles. Our Best Buys give you a little of both worlds. The Chevrolet Corvette is fast, comfortable, and reasonably affordable. Unlike previous models it doesn't beat you up with a hard ride, and it will cruise quietly at highway speeds. Our other Best Buy, the Mazda Miata, is a bare-bones roadster with few frills and average acceleration, but for weekend fun on a twisty back road it's hard to beat.
If you don't mind spending a few more bucks, we recommend you take a look at the BMW Z3 and Mercedes-Benz SLK. Both are two-seat convertibles. The BMW is more sporty and the Mercedes is more luxurious.
If you are interested in bang-for-the-buck our Budget Buys include the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang. At any given price or equipment level the Camaro is a faster car, but the Mustang might be a little more user-friendly as a daily driver.
News
The original ponycar has been a horse of many colors and styling changes since 1979, but underneath it's stayed basically the same. That will finally change for model-year 2003, when industry sources say a brand-new Mustang will ride in on a shortened version of the DEW98 platform that already supports the Lincoln LS and Jaguar S-Type sedans. This formula is also being used for the new retro-air 2001 Thunderbird, but Mustang will have an entirely different look, though traditional styling cues like the galloping-horse grille, triple taillamps and dummy side air scoops will continue. So, too, will coupe and convertible body styles and choice of V6 and V8 power in base and GT trim. A new Cobra version is reportedly part of the plan too, with horsepower rumored at least 350, and a 6-speed manual gearbox may replace today's 5-speed as standard.
Speaking of Cobras, there are none for 2000. Why? Ford's SVT (Special Vehicle Team) operation was too busy fixing '99s so that they made their advertised 320 hp. Apparently, Ford got a bad batch of components that left the twincam V8s with somewhat less power than buyers paid for, creating a storm of protests. Of the 8500 Cobras built for '99, 6500 qualified for an "update kit" to restore the missing ponies, but retrofitting those left no time or resources for building 2000 models. SVT will resume Cobra production this fall for 2001.

Acceleration

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Cobra cpe Class Average
5 7 8 5.7

The V6 feels especially sprightly with manual transmission. The GT's V8 remains robust, but still trails the Camaro/Firebird V8 for all-out kick, though the Cobra is right there in the hunt. We strongly recommend the antilock brakes and traction control.
Fuel Economy

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Cobra cpe Class Average
5 4 3 6.2

Our 5-speed GT test cars averaged 15.5 mpg.
Ride Quality

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Cobra cpe Class Average
4 3 3 3.2

Mustang has a ride-comfort edge over Camaro/Firebird, though bad pavement comes through distinctly in the stiff-riding GT.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Cobra cpe Class Average
5 7 8 6.8

There's plenty of lateral grip and steering feel is good, but all these cars tend to get skittish in bumpy corners.
Quietness

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Cobra cpe Class Average
3 2 2 3

Hard acceleration brings lots of V6 engine ruckus and lots of V8 engine and exhaust roar. Convertibles aren't uncomfortably noisy with the roof raised.
Controls

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Cobra cpe Class Average
6 6 6 5.4

Gauges and controls are legible and easy to use.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Cobra cpe Class Average
5 5 5 4.2

Good room for two and seats are supportive. Long coupe doors are a hassle in tight spaces.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Cobra cpe Class Average
2 2 2 1.3

Grade-school kids might fit, but it's no place for adults.
Cargo Room

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Cobra cpe Class Average
2 1 2 2.8

Trunk space is meager, and the convertible lacks the coupe's folding rear seatback.
Value within Class

Base cpe, auto. GT conv, auto. Cobra cpe Class Average
4 3 3 3.2

Mustang handily outsells its GM competition because its appeal is broader. It's still an impractical car, but easily fulfills its core mission: deliver sporty performance and looks for a reasonable price.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.

Manufacturers may periodically offer additional coverage as a purchase incentive. There offers are not reflected on this chart. The federal government requires two other warranties. The Exhaust Emission Warranty covers corrosion-related parts for 2 years/24,000 miles, plus 8 years/80,000 miles on the catalytic converter and any on-board diagnostic device. The Passenger Restraint Warranty covers seat belts and airbags for 5 years/50,000 miles.
