ACCELERATION
| XL reg. cab 2WD, V6 | XLT SuperCab, 4.6 V8 | Lariat SuperCrew 4WD, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 4 | 5 | 4.9 |
The base V6 is noisy and provides leisurely acceleration. The 4.6-liter V8 is sufficient for most light-duty work, but the 5.4 is satisfyingly stronger. The Lightning is a rocket.
FUEL ECONOMY
| XL reg. cab 2WD, V6 | XLT SuperCab, 4.6 V8 | Lariat SuperCrew 4WD, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 2 | 2 | 1.7 |
We averaged 12.5 mpg over 10,000 miles in a long-term test of a 4.6-liter SuperCab 4x4 with automatic. A test Lightning averaged 14.1 mpg.
RIDE QUALITY
| XL reg. cab 2WD, V6 | XLT SuperCab, 4.6 V8 | Lariat SuperCrew 4WD, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 4 | 5 | 3.4 |
Unless you get an off-road or heavy-duty suspension, your F-150 will have a stable, comfortable ride, with little of the bounce and pitch associated with pickups. The Lightning rides stiffly.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| XL reg. cab 2WD, V6 | XLT SuperCab, 4.6 V8 | Lariat SuperCrew 4WD, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 5 | 4 | 3.4 |
There's a light, numb feel to the steering and body lean is evident in turns, but both are par for the course in this class of vehicle. An exception is the Lightning, which is far more sporting.
QUIETNESS
| XL reg. cab 2WD, V6 | XLT SuperCab, 4.6 V8 | Lariat SuperCrew 4WD, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5 | 4.4 |
In any version, wind and road noise are moderate by pickup standards. Ford's overhead-cam V8s are among the quieter engines in any truck.
CONTROLS
| XL reg. cab 2WD, V6 | XLT SuperCab, 4.6 V8 | Lariat SuperCrew 4WD, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 7 | 6.6 |
Radio and climate controls are mounted high enough but are a bit of a reach for the driver. Other controls are handy, and the gauges are large and clear.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| XL reg. cab 2WD, V6 | XLT SuperCab, 4.6 V8 | Lariat SuperCrew 4WD, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 9 | 10 | 8 |
There's ample passenger room in front, but entry/exit in the tall-riding 4WD models is more of a chore than in GM competitors.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| XL reg. cab 2WD, V6 | XLT SuperCab, 4.6 V8 | Lariat SuperCrew 4WD, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | 4 | 8 | 2.4 |
The new SuperCrew is plenty roomy and comfortable for three adults. SuperCab's seatback is still too upright, and can't match rival Chevy/GMC for comfort.
CARGO ROOM
| XL reg. cab 2WD, V6 | XLT SuperCab, 4.6 V8 | Lariat SuperCrew 4WD, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 5 | 7 | 3.4 |
Regular cabs don't have as much room behind the seat as GM and Dodge rivals, but the SuperCab's rear seat folds to provide a handy compartment with a tough metal floor. SuperCrew's rear seat also folds.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| XL reg. cab 2WD, V6 | XLT SuperCab, 4.6 V8 | Lariat SuperCrew 4WD, 5.4 V8 | Class Average |

F-150 earns its Best Buy status with a keen blend of carlike manners and true-truck muscle. The new SuperCrew gets the drop on GM, but Silverado and Sierra match up well otherwise and offer a more accommodating extended cab. Shop Ford and GM for the best deal on the combination of virtues that suits you.
