ACCELERATION

XLT 4WD, V10 Class Average
3 3.5

Either the V10 or diesel engine gets this 7000-pound SUV to cruising speed fairly quickly. Highway passing response is adequate, too. We've not tested a V8 version.

FUEL ECONOMY

XLT 4WD, V10 Class Average
1 2.3

Dismal. A 2WD V10 averaged 10.8 mpg in our tests, one of the lowest figures we've ever recorded.

RIDE QUALITY

XLT 4WD, V10 Class Average
3 4.2

A stable straight-line cruiser undisturbed by most broken pavement, though bigger bumps and ridges register fairly sharply.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

XLT 4WD, V10 Class Average
2 3

Feels ponderous on twisting roads, responding lazily to steering inputs. The steering itself is light, but turning diameter is huge, making it a chore to maneuver in parking lots.

QUIETNESS

XLT 4WD, V10 Class Average
3 4.6

Suppression of wind rush and road roar is quite good. The diesel idles noisily, but cruises without fuss, and the gas engines intrude only under full throttle.

CONTROLS

XLT 4WD, V10 Class Average
6 6

Gauges are easy to see. Some of our testers had to stretch to reach the audio and climate controls, and the steering wheel partially hides the 4WD switch.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

XLT 4WD, V10 Class Average
9 8.4

Comfortable seats, but the wide transmission tunnel intrudes somewhat into the front passenger's footwell.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

XLT 4WD, V10 Class Average
9 8

Second-row passengers get the roomiest accommodations, highlighted by exceptional leg space. The third-row seat is more confining, but not inhospitable to grownups.

CARGO ROOM

XLT 4WD, V10 Class Average
9 8.8

Huge, even with the third-row seat in place, which can be folded or removed, but is heavy. The second-row bench also folds. There are plenty of bins and cubbies. The rear "Dutch" doors are clever, though neither works with the liftglass closed.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

XLT 4WD, V10 Class Average
2 3

Excursion's size and weight are serious drawbacks if you're going to use it as a "suburban utility vehicle." But if you tow up to 10,000 pounds, need 4WD, and can abide abysmal fuel economy, base prices in $33,400-$41,000 range actually make it a good SUV value.
