2000 Ford Escort/ZX2 Full Review
Date Published: 7/31/08
2000 Ford Escort/ZX2 Review
Ford recently introduced its subcompact Focus, relegating the older subcompact Escort sedan to primarily fleet vehicle duty, though it is available for individual retail sale on special-order. Escort's ZX2 2-door coupe variant continues at dealerships. For 2000, ZX2 consolidates "Cool" and "Hot" trim levels into a single model with a firmer suspension and a 130-horsepower 4-cylinder engine, teamed with manual transmission or optional 4-speed automatic. Antilock brakes are optional. Newly standard on ZX2s are 15-inch wheels and tires in place of 14s, while a cassette player, power mirrors, and rear defroster are now standard instead of optional. A limited edition S/R performance option package is a midyear addition that includes upgraded suspension, larger wheels and tires, and yellow paint.
Competition
This crowded segment is best represented by two exceptional cars--one a Best Buy and the other a Recommended. Our Best Buy is the Honda Civic, which offers a wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment levels. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and is very civilized.

Topping the Recommended list are the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys as they are better than the Civic in many ways. However, they are also the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the no-frills Chevrolet Cavalier and Dodge Neon, the slightly-upscale Chevy Prizm and clone Toyota Corolla, and the roomy Mazda Protege.

If you are looking for a Budget Buy we recommend you stay away from the Hyundai or Daewoo models and take a look at the Ford Escort.
News
Ford hasn't announced plans for either Escort or ZX2. However, with the new Focus doing brisk business in its first six months (nearly 152,000 sold), the clock is ticking for Escort, which will surely be retired soon. Though Focus is a much better small Ford, Escort was stayed a total execution for 2000 because it still makes sense for fleet customers and budget-minded private buyers as a proven low-cost workhorse. If it continues selling well enough for Ford accountants--and sales are still respectable, all things considered, Escort might hang on through 2001, provided its plant space isn't commandeered to build something more profitable. The same should apply to the ZX2, though its mission as the sportiest small Ford will inevitably be assumed by the Focus ZX3 hatchback.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

ZX2, man. Base, auto. Class Average
5 4 3.7

Escorts have adequate power and get around nicely with automatic transmission. ZX2s have more power and feel lively; all perform best with manual transmission.
Fuel Economy

ZX2, man. Base, auto. Class Average
7 7 6.6

We averaged 23.9 mpg in a test of an automatic Escort sedan and 29.0 mpg in a test of an automatic ZX2.
Ride Quality

ZX2, man. Base, auto. Class Average
2 2 3.5

A well-tuned suspension gives Escort better bump-absorption than most subcompacts. ZX2s ride more stiffly.
Steering/Handling/Braking

ZX2, man. Base, auto. Class Average
3 3 4.3

Escorts have competent road manners and power steering with good road feel. The more-agile ZX2s are at home on twisty roads.
Quietness

ZX2, man. Base, auto. Class Average
2 2 3.6

Noise levels are somewhat higher than in Honda's refined Civic; high-rpm engine ruckus is the worst offender.
Controls

ZX2, man. Base, auto. Class Average
4 4 5.5

Escort has a conventional instrument-panel design, the ZX2 an oddly styled dashboard, but both have handy, logical gauges and controls.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

ZX2, man. Base, auto. Class Average
4 4 4.2

These cars have ample front-seat space. Workmanship is a notch above the entry-level norm, though interior decor isn't upscale.

Room/Comfort (rear)

ZX2, man. Base, auto. Class Average
2 3 2.8

Knee room is tight behind a tall front seater in the sedan, and people over 5-foot-8 brush the headliner. The ZX2 has more rear-seat space than most small coupes, but not enough to make an adult happy.
Cargo Room

ZX2, man. Base, auto. Class Average
2 3 3.3

Both sedan and coupe have roomy trunks for their exterior size.
Value within Class

ZX2, man. Base, auto. Class Average
3 5 4.2

The ZX2 is entertaining, but it looks sportier than it performs, and it's overshadowed by subcompact coupes that offer more refinement, comfort, and utility for similar money. Those shopping for a small, sporty car should look at a Honda Civic or Ford's newer Focus ZX3 first.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
