ACCELERATION

Sport, auto. SVT, man. Class Average
4 6 3.7

We clocked a test '99 automatic V6 at a middling 9.3 seconds 0-60 mph, though its transmission downshifted promptly for good highway passing punch. The SVT needs about 8 seconds with manual shift, which is quick and positive.

FUEL ECONOMY

Sport, auto. SVT, man. Class Average
5 5 6.6

We've averaged a reasonable 21.7 mpg with automatic and the 170-hp V6. We haven't measured an SVT, but it should be only a bit thirstier with a gentle right foot.

RIDE QUALITY

Sport, auto. SVT, man. Class Average
3 2 3.5

The Sport isn't exactly harsh, but you do feel most bumps. Same goes for the SVT, though its firmer damping and harder tires make most bumps more noticeable.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

Sport, auto. SVT, man. Class Average
6 7 4.3

Contour is based on Ford's European Mondeo, so the Sport outhandles most rivals, with quick, stable cornering and responsive steering. The SVT is even more athletic and fun to drive.

QUIETNESS

Sport, auto. SVT, man. Class Average
4 3 3.6

Road noise can be intrusive in either model, but Contour's V6s sound nice and aren't noisy except when pushed hard. Wind noise is moderate too.

CONTROLS

Sport, auto. SVT, man. Class Average
4 4 5.5

Busy audio controls and power mirror switches semi-hidden to the left of the steering wheel detract from an otherwise well-designed dashboard.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

Sport, auto. SVT, man. Class Average
4 4 4.2

At best, Contour remains mid-pack for space among compact sedans, a big reason why sales have never lived up to expectations. At least the front buckets are firm and supportive.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

Sport, auto. SVT, man. Class Average
3 3 2.8

Several modifications over the years have finally created liveable rear leg room for medium-size adults. Head room remains tight for tall passengers, though.

CARGO ROOM

Sport, auto. SVT, man. Class Average
3 3 3.3

Again, most rivals better Contour for space in this area, though what's provided is useful.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

Sport, auto. SVT, man. Class Average
4 3 4.2

Though smaller inside than some rivals, Contour has polished road manners and reasonable prices--and discounts should be readily available.
