ACCELERATION
| RT/10 | GTS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 10 | 7.4 |
Sizzling surge from virtually any speed in any gear, so watch yourself, especially on damp roads, as traction control isn't available even at extra cost.
FUEL ECONOMY
| RT/10 | GTS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | 4.7 |
Poor, but this is America's biggest, brawniest passenger-car engine. A GTS averaged 14 mpg with half our miles on the freeway, where overdrive fifth- and sixth-gear ratios help mileage.
RIDE QUALITY
| RT/10 | GTS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | 3.4 |
Stiff and thumpy except on the glassiest surfaces. The roadster is virtually flex-free, but its bonded-on body panels flutter and vibrate over even mildly rough pavement.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| RT/10 | GTS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 9 | 7.6 |
A stiff structure, firm chassis, and ultra-wide tires mean enormous cornering grip and virtually no body lean on dry roads. Prodigious engine torque demands caution in the wet, however.
QUIETNESS
| RT/10 | GTS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 3.6 |
Noise levels are tiresomely high in both Vipers--the big V10 especially--and the convertible suffers intense wind buffeting with its top removed.
CONTROLS
| RT/10 | GTS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 5.1 |
Simple, direct, and much more professional than on the earliest Vipers.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| RT/10 | GTS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.7 |
Entry/exit is the usual sports-car squeeze, but head and leg room are ample. Lots of engine heat seeps in, so you'll run the air conditioning a lot, especially in the coupe.
CARGO ROOM
| RT/10 | GTS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 2.2 |
No interior storage to speak of, and the roadster's tiny, ill-shaped trunk holds little more than a couple of gym bags. The GTS has space enough for a weekend's worth of soft luggage.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| RT/10 | GTS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 2.5 |
There are more-civilized high-performance sports cars that cost less and demand less energy to drive. But few automobiles of any price match Viper's bold nature. Dodge builds just enough to keep supply behind demand, so don't expect a big discount.
