Vehicle Highlights

The oldest basic design among full-size vans returns with few changes after getting an extensive update in 1998 featuring modernized styling, a new instrument panel with dual airbags, and more front-to-rear walk-through space. Dodge's cargo models are badged Ram Vans and account for the bulk of sales, including conversions. Passenger models are called Ram Wagons. Both offer regular, extended and extra-long Maxi bodies.
A 3.9-liter V6 is standard for 1500s. A 5.2-liter V8, which loses 5 horsepower and pound-feet of torque for 2000, is optional for them and standard on 2500 and 3500 models. Available for 1500 Cargo and 2500/3500 models is a 5.9-liter V8. The V6 teams only with three-speed automatic transmission, the V8s with a four-speed unit. Rear-wheel antilock brakes remain standard, 4-wheel ABS optional.
As pure work vehicles, Ram Vans come without rear side windows and only a pair of front bucket seats; a key-operated dashboard switch allows disabling the passenger-side airbag. Dual swing-out right-side doors remain standard, with a substitute sliding door optional. Out back are dual doors or an optional side-hinged single door. Standard payloads range from 6600 pounds on 1500s to 9200 pounds on MaxiVans 3500s. Among the few other changes for 2000 are hood-mounted windshield washer nozzles, optional chrome-clad wheels, and a new fuel cap. Also, for commercial and fleet buyers, Dodge again offers a compressed natural gas-fueled 5.2-liter V8. Rated at 200 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque, this engine is optional except on 2500/3500 models.

COMPETITION

Though it's nearly a toss up among the Chevrolet Express, Ford Econoline, and GMC Savana, we have selected the Ford as our Best Buy. It offers just a bit more drivability and creature comforts. Though there is nothing wrong with the Dodge Ram Van, we feel it just can't match the newer designs from Ford and GM.
