ACCELERATION
| Base, 2.7 V6 | ES, 3.2 V6 | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 5 | 6 | 5.6 |
Merely adequate with the 200-hp V6, and passing is sluggish with three or more adults aboard. The 225-hp V6 is no powerhouse, but Autostick helps it scoot through traffic, and passing and merging are surer. We've not yet tested an R/T.
FUEL ECONOMY
| Base, 2.7 V6 | ES, 3.2 V6 | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 5 | 5 | 4.6 |
The 200-hp V6 gives this large car impressive fuel economy: 26.2 mpg in our most-recent test, which included lots of highway driving. Our test 225-hp models average about 21 mpg.
RIDE QUALITY
| Base, 2.7 V6 | ES, 3.2 V6 | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 5 | 6.1 |
Firm and stable without being harsh on rough pavement. There's no difference in suspension tuning between base and uplevel models, though the R/T has firmer ride tuning and low-profile performance tires.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| Base, 2.7 V6 | ES, 3.2 V6 | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 7 | 4.9 |
Poised and controlled, Intrepid and Concorde are among the best-handling full-size sedans.
QUIETNESS
| Base, 2.7 V6 | ES, 3.2 V6 | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 4 | 6 |
Both cars benefit from Chrysler's efforts to reduce road noise and now are as quiet as most similarly priced competitors.
CONTROLS
| Base, 2.7 V6 | ES, 3.2 V6 | R/T | Class Average |

Dashboard layouts are similar and put the radio a bit too far from the driver. Other controls and gauges are close by and intelligently designed. Interior assembly is sound, though an abundance of hard plastic surfaces is at odds with the cabin's otherwise pleasing atmosphere.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| Base, 2.7 V6 | ES, 3.2 V6 | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 7 | 6.9 |
Roomy overall, but some 6-footers don't have enough leg room to really stretch out. Only children are comfortable in the front bench seat's middle position, and they should sit in back, anyway.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| Base, 2.7 V6 | ES, 3.2 V6 | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 7 | 5.8 |
Terrific leg room and plenty of head space, though Concorde's taller roofline provides slightly more scalp clearance. Doorways are big, but the rear door shape on both models hampers entry.
CARGO ROOM
| Base, 2.7 V6 | ES, 3.2 V6 | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6 | 5.8 |
The folding rear seatback on Intrepid ES and R/T is more versatile than Concorde's trunk pass-through, but both cars have a huge trunk whose flat floor extends so far forward that a sliding cargo bin would be a great idea. Both also have a high trunk liftover, and Intrepid's trunk opening is slightly narrower overall than Concorde's.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| Base, 2.7 V6 | ES, 3.2 V6 | R/T | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 8 | 6.3 |
Intredid targets the sportier buyer, while Concorde's message is one of stylish comfort. Both do their jobs well, being roomy, athletic, and competitively priced. Their reputation for reliability lags behind that of such rivals as the Toyota Avalon and Buick LeSabre, over overall, Concorde and Intrepid are impressive values.
