2000 Daewoo Nubira Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2000 Daewoo Nubira Review
Daewoo's larger subcompact is modestly restyled for 2000, adding an inch to length and several hundred pounds but losing its hatchback body style. Front-cabin dimensions are claimed to be slightly improved. A 2.0-liter 4-cylinder remains the only engine, again teaming with manual or optional automatic transmission.
Uplevel CDX sedan and wagon continue, but last year's base SX sedan gives way to an SE model costing $1260 less, thanks to omission of standard air conditioning, heated power mirrors, power windows and locks, and tilt steering wheel. However, those items are newly standard on CDXs, which also have alloy wheels, fog lights, CD player, and available leather seating. Antilock brakes are standard on CDXs but unavailable on SEs. Daewoo's warranty includes roadside assistance and scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36,000 miles.
Competition
This crowded segment is best represented by two exceptional cars--one a Best Buy and the other a Recommended. Our Best Buy is the Honda Civic, which offers a wide range of bodystyles, engines, and equipment levels. Civic is a solid car that has good performance, a nice ride, and is very civilized. Topping the Recommended list are the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta. They easily could be Best Buys as they are better than the Civic in many ways. However, they are also the most expensive cars in this segment. Other Recommended choices include the no-frills Chevrolet Cavalier and Dodge Neon, the slightly-upscale Chevy Prizm and clone Toyota Corolla, and the roomy Mazda Protege. If you are looking for a Budget Buy we recommend you stay away from the Hyundai or Daewoo models and take a look at the Ford Escort.
News
The middle model from this Johnny-come-lately South Korean company got a mild update for 2000, so Nubira should see no other changes of consequence for the next few years. But that's assuming that Daewoo survives. Though its sales have lately been trending up in a reviving South Korean economy and here in the U.S., Daewoo still faces the challenge of clearing a huge debt load that only grew larger when Asian economies tanked two years ago. Since then, Daewoo has been a much-rumored takeover target, with General Motors most often mentioned as a likely buyer. Right now, however, Daewoo is still on its own, and, given its current condition, may well remain so.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

SE sdn, man. CDX wgn, auto. Class Average
3 3 3.7

Our test CDX wagon with automatic ambled to 60 mph in 10.1 seconds, about 0.4-second slower than a similar '98 model. A couple hundred extra pounds for 2000 accounts for the difference.
Fuel Economy

SE sdn, man. CDX wgn, auto. Class Average
5 5 6.6

We averaged about 20 mpg in hard driving--so-so for a small car.
Ride Quality

SE sdn, man. CDX wgn, auto. Class Average
3 3 3.5

Not a sore point before, nor this year either. Nubira has a fairly supple suspension, so the ride only becomes really choppy when the pavement does.
Steering/Handling/Braking

SE sdn, man. CDX wgn, auto. Class Average
3 3 4.3

No complaints, but no kudos either. Wimpy tires limit grip somewhat, but cornering is nimble and front-drive safe despite moderate body lean and front-end scrubbing in tight turns.
Quietness

SE sdn, man. CDX wgn, auto. Class Average
3 3 3.6

Like its smaller sister, the Lanos, Nubira suffers marked mechanical thrash at high rpm, though the engine quiets down nicely at cruise, where wind and road noise are equally moderate.
Controls

SE sdn, man. CDX wgn, auto. Class Average
6 6 5.5

Typical of modern Asian cars in design and layout, with legible gauges and guess-free controls, though the "A/C" and "recirculation" indicator lights are tough to see except at night.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

SE sdn, man. CDX wgn, auto. Class Average
4 4 4.2

Head, leg, and hip room are more than sufficient for up to 6-footers, but seat shape and padding aren't the best.
Room/Comfort (rear)

SE sdn, man. CDX wgn, auto. Class Average
3 3 2.8

Cabin width precludes more than two adults, and they'll sit knees-up if a front seat is pushed far back, but head space and underseat toe room are okay.
Cargo Room

SE sdn, man. CDX wgn, auto. Class Average
3 7 3.3

Sedans have slightly better than average trunk space for the class. The wagon offers as much cargo room and utility as Hyundai's rival Elantra model, but Ford's new Focus wagon beats both.
Value within Class

SE sdn, man. CDX wgn, auto. Class Average
1 1 4.2

With the conspicuous exception of cruise control, our top-line automatic CDX wagon delivers lots of features for just under $16,000, and the base SE sedan starts below $11K. Otherwise, Nubira is just an average subcompact from a company still getting its act together in the U.S., so buy with caution--and not before checking the competition, especially Ford's impressive new Focus.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Test Daewoo Nubira 4-door sedan Daewoo Nubira 4-door wagon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
