2000 Chrysler Town & Country Full Review
Date Published: 3/14/08
2000 Chrysler Town & Country Review
Town & Country loses its regular-length version for 2000, but it's replaced in showrooms by the Voyager, rebadged a Chrysler during the retirement of the Plymouth brand. Town & Country continues as the luxury version of the Voyager and related Dodge Caravan. All three will be redesigned for 2001, with fresh styling and new features, including two power sliding side doors and a power rear liftgate.

Seats for seven and sliding doors on both sides are standard on Town & Country; no power sliding door is offered. The top-of-the-line Limited model gets leather seats with simulated suede trim, a third-row bench with center armrest, chrome wheels, and body-color roof rack.

Town & Country's available all-wheel-drive (AWD) system automatically directs power to the rear wheels as needed. A 3.3-liter V6 is standard on LX and LXi models. The 3.8-liter V6 standard on Limiteds and AWD models is optional on the front-drive LXi. Automatic transmission, air conditioning, and antilock brakes are standard; AWD models get 4-wheel disc brakes. A load-leveling rear suspension is standard on Limiteds, optional on LX and LXi, and included with AWD. Town & Country, Caravan, and Voyager offer a $1500 dealer-installed rear-seat video entertainment system that includes a VCR, 6.4-inch liquid crystal display screen, headphones, and remote control.
Competition
Chrysler started the minivan trend back in 1984, and they remain one of our Best Buys today. Though the competition has heated up, we still feel that the Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Voyager are two of the best you can buy. They offer all of the creature comforts in a pleasing package at a fair price. Our other Best Buy is the Honda Odyssey. It's a little bit smaller than the Chryslers, but more sporty to drive, and it has a super-convenient flip-and-fold-away rear seat.

Trailing at a close second are the Recommended Chevy Venture and Ford Windstar. Though these vans are comparably priced and offer loads of neat features, we feel they can't match the road manners of our Best Buys.

News
Chrysler gives its Voyager and Town & Country a thorough makeover for 2001. The related Dodge Caravans are also updated on this minivan's basic 1995 design. Though full details weren't available for this report, the press has already seen the '01s, which go on sale this fall.

Highlights begin with slicker styling that adds nearly 2 inches to width and makes standard Voyagers 2.8 inches longer overall. T&Cs and Grand Voyagers are little changed in length. Underneath, the minivan's unibody is claimed to be substantially stiffer and stronger for better crash protection and improved quietness. Also for safety, all models get front seatbelt pretensioners and switch to sensor-monitored dual-stage dashboard airbags that deploy with differing force to match the weight and size of occupants. Front side airbags appear for the first time as standard in some models and optional elsewhere. The suspension features revised geometry and retuned damping.

Voyagers got Chrysler badges during the 2000 model year as part of Plymouth's phase-out, and continue as the more affordable Chrysler models. T&C choices for 2001 haven't been announced, but last year's LX, LXi and top-line Limited price levels should return, all extended-length offerings. A little-changed 2.4-liter 4-cylinder continues for basic Voyagers, while other models divide among three V6s. Last year's 3.0-liter unit has been dropped, but the familiar 3.3- and 3.8-liter V6s are revamped for smoother, quieter operation and more power, the 3.3 gaining 22 for 180 total, the 3.8 adding 35 hp for 215. Newly optional for some T&Cs is the overhead-cam 3.5-liter V6 from Chrysler's 300M sedan, though it makes only 230 hp in the minivan instead of 253 due to differences in intake and exhaust plumbing. All engines again team exclusively with 4-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive continues as an alternative to the normal front drive.

Chrysler scored a minivan first with dual sliding rear side doors. The '01 models add optional power operation, thus belatedly matching a feature offered by most rivals. The power assist can be ordered for both doors or the right door only. One-upping the competition is an available power tailgate, which mimics the power side doors in being operable by either an interior button or from the remote-control keyfob. Other new features include a movable center console with storage and power points that can be used between the front or second-row seats, a rear parcel shelf that folds out to become a three-section open storage box, and a split third-row bench with reclining backrests as an alternative to a one-piece seat.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

LXi, 3.8 V6 Class Average
5 3.6

The 3.3-liter V6 has adequate power, but the 3.8's extra muscle makes expressway merging and uphill climbs noticeably easier, especially with a load; it's our engine of choice.
Fuel Economy

LXi, 3.8 V6 Class Average
4 3.9

We averaged 15 mpg in a test of an AWD model; 3.3-liter models manage about 17 mpg overall.
Ride Quality

LXi, 3.8 V6 Class Average
6 4.9

Firm yet supple, though the AWD and towing options have firmer damping that's mediocre at absorbing bumps.
Steering/Handling/Braking

LXi, 3.8 V6 Class Average
4 4.3

As do its less-costly siblings, Town & Country drives like a large car, with precise steering and reasonably balanced handling. AWD works, but 3.8-liter front-drive models come with traction control that copes well with winter weather.
Quietness

LXi, 3.8 V6 Class Average
5 4.5

Among the quieter minivans, with engines well-isolated, though wind and especially tire noise are noticed as speed increases.
Controls

LXi, 3.8 V6 Class Average
6 5.7

Gauges and controls are logically arrayed, though it's a slight stretch to the radio and climate controls.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

LXi, 3.8 V6 Class Average
7 6

Fine room for even larger adults. Step-in height is among the lowest in the class, so entry/exit is easy even with AWD.
Room/Comfort (rear)

LXi, 3.8 V6 Class Average
8 6.4

Sufficient head and leg room in second and third rows. Double sliding doors are standard, but GM rivals have a power right-side sliding door and Ford, Toyota, and Honda offer two power sliders.
Cargo Room

LXi, 3.8 V6 Class Average
10 9.3

There's ample cargo space, even with all seats in use. Second- and third-row seats are heavy and cumbersome to remove, though that's true of nearly all competitors.
Value within Class

LXi, 3.8 V6 Class Average
6 5.8

Town & Country isn't the Best Buy value a Caravan or Voyager is, but as a minivan for the status-conscious, this Chrysler offers lots of posh for the price.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
