Vehicle Highlights
Two significantly different cars share the Sebring badge. The convertible is based on the Chrysler Cirrus sedan. The coupe shares its Mitsubishi-based components with the Dodge Avenger. The convertible outsells the coupe 2-1. More standard equipment for the base-level coupe heads a short list of changes for 2000 as Sebring prepares for a 2001 redesign.
The convertible comes in base JX and mid-level JXi models, and optional luxury JXi Limited trim; all have a power top with defrosted glass rear window. Coupes offer LX and LXi models. Convertibles use a Chrysler-made V6, coupes a Mitsubishi V6. All Sebrings have automatic transmission; JXi Limited equipment includes Chrysler's Autostick, an automatic that can be shifted manually. Antilock brakes are standard on Sebring convertibles, optional on coupes.
For 2000, convertibles offer an optional emergency escape release inside the trunk and gain additional body insulation designed to reduce noise and vibration. The LX coupe gets several features that previously were optional, including cruise control, power windows, 4-wheel disc brakes, and 16-inch wheels. The LXi and JXi Limited also have 4-wheel discs.
COMPETITION
The performance leader in this group is also our Best Buy. The Honda Prelude will hustle two large adults and their luggage in comfort and luxury to a weekend getaway. Prelude has plenty of power, excellent road manners, and gets reasonable fuel economy.
We also recommend you take a look at the Chrysler Sebring (which will be redesigned for 2001 in coupe, convertible, and sedan form) and the Volkswagen New Beetle. The Sebring offers the most room in this class, while the New Beetle has interesting styling and a nice mix of comfort, performance, and economy.
