ACCELERATION

LX, 2.7 V6 LXI, 3.2 V6 Class Average
4 5 5.6

Neither engine is as strong as GM's 3.8-liter V6, but the 3.2 liter has good power at low speeds and for passing. The 2.7 provides adequate acceleration, but feels overworked in highway passing or merging.

FUEL ECONOMY

LX, 2.7 V6 LXI, 3.2 V6 Class Average
6 5 4.6

The 2.7 does give this large car impressive fuel economy: We averaged 26.2 mpg in a test that included lots of highway driving. The 3.2 averages about 21 mpg.

RIDE QUALITY

LX, 2.7 V6 LXI, 3.2 V6 Class Average
7 7 6.1

The suspension soaks up rough roads and provides a stable highway ride.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

LX, 2.7 V6 LXI, 3.2 V6 Class Average
6 6 4.9

Concorde steers and changes direction with responsive confidence, though its moves are not as crisp as those of the sportier Intrepid and 300M.

QUIETNESS

LX, 2.7 V6 LXI, 3.2 V6 Class Average
5 5 6

Wind and engine noise are well muffled.

CONTROLS

LX, 2.7 V6 LXI, 3.2 V6 Class Average
6 6 5.3

Clear gauges and large, well-marked climate and audio controls highlight the dashboard.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

LX, 2.7 V6 LXI, 3.2 V6 Class Average
7 7 6.9

Generous height and width, though only children are comfortable in the bench seat's middle position. Oddly, the front passenger seat lacks enough leg room for 6-footers to stretch.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

LX, 2.7 V6 LXI, 3.2 V6 Class Average
7 7 5.8

Among the few cars wide enough to carry three adults without uncomfortable squeezing. Slightly more head room than in Intrepid. Doorways are big, but the door shape hampers entry.

CARGO ROOM

LX, 2.7 V6 LXI, 3.2 V6 Class Average
6 6 5.8

Amply sized trunk with an opening wider than Intrepid's, but liftover is high. The rear seatback features a fold-down pass-through opening.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

LX, 2.7 V6 LXI, 3.2 V6 Class Average
8 8 6.3

Acceleration is ordinary, and its reputation for reliability lags behind that of such rivals as the Toyota Avalon and Buick LeSabre. But overall, Concorde is an impressive value with distinctive styling, loads of room, and fine handling.
