2000 Chevrolet Tracker Full Review

2000 Chevrolet Tracker Review
A surf-motif appearance option for the convertible heads the short list of changes to the 2000 edition of Chevrolet's smallest sport-utility vehicle. Tracker was redesigned last year to be slightly longer and wider, with rounded styling.
Tracker again offers a 2-door convertible and a longer 4-door wagon. Both have running gear and body-on-frame construction designed by Suzuki, which markets its own versions as the Vitara. Though the Japanese company offers a V6 Grand Vitara wagon, Tracker is limited to 4-cylinder power--for now. The 2001 Tracker is scheduled to offer the V6, as well. For 2000, the convertible has a standard 1.6-liter 4-cylinder and offers a 2.0-liter option that is standard on the wagon. Automatic transmission is optional only with the 2.0 liter. All models are available with rear-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive. The 4WD isn't for use on dry pavement, but does offer on-the-fly shifting between 2WD and 4-high, plus separate 4-low gearing. The new convertible option package is the Hang Ten Edition, which includes special headrests, floormats, spare tire cover, and decals.
Competition
Ignored in the past, compact SUVs are now some of the hottest-selling vehicles around. The two current Best Buys are the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester. Though they don't offer true off-road ability, they mix the best ride, cargo, and comfort characteristics with all-weather traction.
Toyota's RAV4 , which used to be a Best Buy, falls to Recommended based on its noisy engine and cramped rear seating area. Toyota hopes that will change when an all-new RAV arrives in 2001.
As immovable as Mt. Rushmore, the Jeep Wrangler continues as our Budget Buy in this segment. Though it has become a status symbol of late, it's most at home crawling over rocks and fording river beds.
News
Helped by a full redesign, Chevy's smallest SUV posted a 50-percent year-over-year sales gain in calendar 1999. Though industry sources say Tracker will stay basically as is through model-year 2005, this fall should introduce a first-ever V6 option. Tracker remains a Suzuki design closely related to the Japanese brand's Vitara (Sidekick before that). Suzuki began offering V6 power several years ago, but didn't share it so as to maintain a competitive advantage over Chevrolet. Suzuki's evident change of heart likely reflects some lobbying by Chevy, which sells far more Trackers than Suzuki does Vitaras. Also, because both vehicles are built in a jointly run Canadian plant, Suzuki makes more money by helping Chevy sell more Trackers, something the V6 will almost surely do.

Acceleration

Base conv 2WD, man. LT 4WD Class Average
2 3 2.9

Both engines struggle to build speed from a stop or in passing. With its V6, Suzuki's Grand Vitara is much stronger.
Fuel Economy

Base conv 2WD, man. LT 4WD Class Average
5 4 4.8

We averaged 20.2 mpg with a 2.0-liter 5-speed 4WD soft-top--not great for a mini SUV. Wagons should do slightly worse.
Ride Quality

Base conv 2WD, man. LT 4WD Class Average
1 2 2.7

Some fore-aft pitching even on fairly smooth roads, but most bumps are absorbed without jarring.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base conv 2WD, man. LT 4WD Class Average
2 2 3.5

Competent, with unexceptional grip in turns. Overall, Tracker feels less composed than the Honda CR-V--though neither matches the car-based Subaru Forester.
Quietness

Base conv 2WD, man. LT 4WD Class Average
1 2 2.4

Wind and road noise are lower than in most compact SUVs, but both engines are gruff and loud in hard acceleration.
Controls

Base conv 2WD, man. LT 4WD Class Average
3 3 4.4

Radio and climate controls are within easy reach, but are mounted low enough to require a long look away from the road to adjust--and the radio has particularly tiny buttons.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base conv 2WD, man. LT 4WD Class Average
3 3 4.4

Seats are firm and comfortable, and there's sufficient leg room along with ample head room.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base conv 2WD, man. LT 4WD Class Average
2 3 2.9

Short on leg room unless the front seats are well forward. There's a moderate step-up into the interior, but the narrow rear doors make it awkward to get in and out.
Cargo Room

Base conv 2WD, man. LT 4WD Class Average
6 6 6.6

Scant behind the rear seat, but the standard split/folding seatback drops to increase space and versatility. Tailgate opens to the right, hampering curbside loading.
Value within Class

Base conv 2WD, man. LT 4WD Class Average
2 2 3.8

Tracker has minor off-road prowess going for it, but remains an also-ran among mini-SUVs in the kind of driving most people do. A CR-V, Forester, or RAV4 is much more pleasant and enjoyable. They're roomier too, and have higher resale values.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Chevrolet Tracker 2-door convertible Chevrolet Tracker 4-door wagon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
