Regardless of brand, the 4-cylinder performs best with manual transmission, providing adequate acceleration in light-duty chores. If you are considering an automatic or plan even occasional hauling, get a V6. They have plenty of power.

The base suspension gives a relatively soft ride. Higher-payload and off-road suspensions are much firmer, so drive them before buying. As in any light truck, the tail will hop over sharp bumps with an empty cargo bed.

Though body lean is evident in turns, these compact pickups feel balanced and poised, with a natural feel to the power steering and good resistance to gusty crosswinds.

Wind noise is moderate, engines are gruff when cold or under hard throttle, but are not raucous cruisers. Road noise varies from little on base-tire models to lots with knobby 4x4 rubber.

Predictably, extended-cab's jump seats suit only children. Third door is a convenience, but eliminates a jump seat. Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series extended-cabs offer two rear doors and two rear jump seats.

Regular-cabs have little space behind the seat. In-cab extended-model storage space isn't quite as extensive as on Ford and Dodge rivals, though the third door helps accessibility.

Dakota and the Ranger/B-Series are our compact pickup Best Buys, with the S-10, Sonoma, and Hombre penalized by an aging design and the absence of two rear doors. But their prices, payloads, and power are competitive with most others in this class, and discounts are readily available.
