2000 Chevrolet Malibu Full Review

2000 Chevrolet Malibu Review
This midsize sedan with a storied '60s name gets a mild facelift and a standard V6 for 2000. Slotting below the larger Impala in price and market position, Malibu offers base and upscale LS models. The base version drops its 4-cylinder engine in favor of the same 3.1-liter V6 that powers the LS; it has 15 more horsepower for 2000. Both models get a freshened nose, and a rear spoiler is newly optional for the LS, as are gold exterior badges. Unlike Impala, which can seat six, Malibu has standard front bucket seats for 5-passenger capacity. Both Malibu models come with floor-shift automatic transmission, antilock brakes, air conditioning, and tachometer. Leather upholstery is optional for the LS.
Competition
Perennial Best Buys Honda Accord and Toyota Camry continue to shine with refinement, model diversity, and comfort. Both come in coupe and sedan form, offer economic 4-cylinder or sporty V6 power, have room for four adults, and are reasonably priced.
Recommended models include the smooth Buick Century, the import-flavored Chevy Malibu, the sporty Nissan Maxima, surprising Olds Intrigue, and the good-looking Pontiac Grand Prix. All come with V6 power, offer lots of standard equipment, and have pleasing road manners that will suit a variety of driving styles.
If you are looking for something a touch bigger without spending a whole lot more we suggest the Budget Buy Chevy Impala. It's the largest car in this class, has a powerful V6, and doesn't cost any more than the others.
News
Though its calendar-1999 sales were down somewhat from '98 levels, Malibu still pulled in over 200,000 orders and trended upwards year-over-year in the first four months of 2000. Malibu should see little basic change until 2005, when a new-design replacement arrives. That car will be built on yet another new General Motors platform called Epsilon, which is also destined for the next-generation Pontiac Grand Am and Oldsmobile Alero. Not much else is known yet about the '05 Malibu, but sources say it will be slightly wider outside and correspondingly roomier inside than today's model.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base/LS Class Average
5 4.7

The smooth-running V6 is strong off the line and around town, but isn't particularly energetic at highway speeds.
Fuel Economy

Base/LS Class Average
5 5.4

Our test car averaged about 19 mpg in a mix of city and highway driving.
Ride Quality

Base/LS Class Average
5 5

Rough pavement is easily absorbed, though the suspension and tires thump loudly over ruts and potholes.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base/LS Class Average
5 5

In normal driving, Malibu feels maneuverable and secure. Aggressive cornering brings on tire scrubbing and substantial body lean and makes the steering feel slow and vague.
Quietness

Base/LS Class Average
4 5

Wind and road noise are high enough to keep these cars from qualifying as serene long-distance cruisers.
Controls

Base/LS Class Average
7 6

The analog instrumentation is unobstructed, stalks for wipers and headlamps convenient, audio and climate controls large and accessible.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base/LS Class Average
5 5.2

Generous head and leg room, and a tasteful mix of fabrics, plastics, and padded surfaces for an upscale feel.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base/LS Class Average
4 4.1

Good leg room with front seats less than halfway back, though seat is flat and uncomfortable. Head room is sufficient for those under 6-feet tall.
Cargo Room

Base/LS Class Average
6 4.5

The large trunk has a flat floor, huge opening, and a near-bumper-level sill.
Value within Class

Base/LS Class Average
8 5.3

It's no cut-rate Camry, but Malibu delivers a fine blend of utility, driving satisfaction, and features at an attractive price. It's a strong Recommend pick.

Base 4-door sedan $16,535 $15,130 $560

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
