Vehicle Highlights
Chevrolet's full-size van is a cousin to the GMC Savanna. Both are again little changed for 2000. Express people-haulers are called Passenger Vans, the cargo versions (usually used in conversion vans) Express Cargo Van. Choices divide among regular and extended bodies and half-ton G1500, 3/4-ton G2500 and one-ton G3500 chassis; 1500s come only in regular form. All models have two swing-open rear-end doors and, on the passenger side, either 60/40 doors or a sliding door. Regular Passenger Vans seat 5-8 depending on options; extendeds carry 12-15. Middle and rear bench seats slide on built-in tracks and can be removed. Some side windows are top-hinged to push out at the bottom for ventilation. Cargo models have two front seats and blank side and rear panels instead of windows.
A 4.3-liter V6, now with minor improvements for quietness and durability, remains standard on 1500s and cargo 2500s. Optional on those models is a 5.0-liter V8. A 5.7-liter V8 is standard on 2500 Passenger Vans and all 3500s, optional elsewhere. An available 7.4-liter V8 is exclusive to 3500s, and a 6.5-liter turbodiesel V8 remains optional for 2500/3500s with GVWRs above 8600 pounds. All engines team with four-speed automatic transmission. Other standard features include dual front airbags, anti-theft system, and 4-wheel antilock brakes. Maximum tow ratings are 6500 pounds for 1500s, 8000 for 2500s, and 10,000 for 3500s.
COMPETITION
Though it's nearly a toss up among the Chevrolet Express, Ford Econoline, and GMC Savana, we have selected the Ford as our Best Buy. It offers just a bit more drivability and creature comforts.
Though there is nothing wrong with the Dodge Ram Van, we feel it just can't match the newer designs from Ford and GM.
