2000 Chevrolet Blazer Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2000 Chevrolet Blazer Review
Chevrolet's midsize SUV alters its 2000 lineup as it prepares for an early 2002-model-year redesign. Blazer drops base-trim models, leaving 2-door wagons in LS trim and 4-doors in LS, LT, and top-line TrailBlazer form. The 2-door's carried-over ZR2 package includes an elevated off-road suspension. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard on 2-doors. Automatic is optional on 2-doors and standard on 4-doors. All use a 190-horsepower V6 and offer rear-wheel drive or extra-cost 4-wheel drive. LTs and TrailBlazers get General Motors' Autotrac system, which can be used on dry pavement and automatically engages the front axle only when needed. Other 4x4s have GM's Insta-Trac, which is for use only on slippery surfaces. Both systems provide high- and low-range 4WD gearing.
For 2000, the Premium Ride suspension with its gas-charged shock absorbers is standard on all models. No-cost options now include the softer Smooth Ride suspension for 4-doors and the tauter Solid Smooth Ride setup for 2-doors. An in-dash CD player is added to uplevel audio options. GM's OnStar assistance system is available on LT and TrailBlazer, where it is standard.
Blazer is built from the same design as the GMC Jimmy and the Oldsmobile Bravada. All three are being redesigned for release as '02 models starting in early 2001. The new versions will be slightly larger and will offer an inline-6-cylinder engine.
Competition
This is by far the hottest market segment right now. Crowded with more than 20 vehicles, midsize SUVs vary in size and type but nearly all seat five adults and offer V6 or V8 engines. Our Best Buys include the Ford Explorer, the Lexus RX 300, and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. Explorer and M-Class are more traditional SUVs with full off-road capability and V6 and V8 engines. RX 300 is a car-based SUV that lacks a low range in 4WD mode, but is the most carlike to drive.
Our Recommended choices are all traditional SUVs: the Dodge Durango, which offers optional third-row seating; the slightly more expensive Explorer clone Mercury Mountaineer; the utilitarian Nissan Xterra; and the refined but expensive Toyota 4Runner.
If you are on a Budget take a look at the old standby Jeep Cherokee. It is cruder than the rest but offers go-anywhere ability, utility, and a low price.
News
A new-generation Blazer is on track for 2002, only the badge will read TrailBlazer on all models. They are slated to go on sale in the first quarter of 2001 as early '02 entries. Chevy's midsize SUV will still relate to the Oldsmobile Bravada and GMC's Envoy (the Jimmy name goes away there), but all three versions are redesigned on a new chassis with 113-inch wheelbase (up 6 inches), rear coil springs with 5-link geometry (replacing shackled leaf springs), and a new 4.2-liter inline 6-cylinder engine to replace the familiar 4.3-liter V6. The 4.2 is an all-aluminum twincam design vs. the all-iron overhead-valve V6 and is expected to produce 60 additional horsepower, about 250 in all. Full specifications and other details weren't available for this report, but 4x4s should continue with a choice of on-demand InstaTrac or all-weather AutoTrac drive systems. Style-wise, TrailBlazer should be more sharply differentiated from its corporate cousins than is now the case, with only windshield, front doors, roof and tailgate being shared among the three. Like GMC, Chevy might well drop the 2-door body style owing to sluggish sales, but the mainstay 4-door is said to be slightly longer, wider and taller than the current design for claimed increases in most interior dimensions. Intriguingly, industry snoops say an extended 4-door with a 16-inch longer wheelbase and standard three-row seating will be added by late 2002, giving Chevy a closer match for the Dodge Durango in passenger capacity and overall size. A V8 is also rumored for TrailBlazer, though probably not until mid-2002 at the earliest.
However, TrailBlazer seems certain to parent two "crossover" vehicles by 2003. One is patterned on the Transverse concept unveiled at the 2000 Detroit Show. The name hasn't been decided, but this "truck-based sedan" will reportedly have a 255-horsepower 4.5-liter inline-6, permanent all-wheel drive, and car-like suspension tuning and interior appointments. Despite the truck underpinnings, this Chevy will target car-based SUVs like the popular Lexus RX 300 and Acura's new MDX. TrailBlazer's other spinoff does have a name. Called Warrior, it apes Ford's new Explorer Sport Trac in combining the SUV's front end and passenger compartment with a short pickup box. Powertrains will likely be the same as TrailBlazer's, but it's unclear whether Warrior will get a movable rear-cab bulkhead for extending the load floor as on Chevy's forthcoming Avalanche derived from the big Suburban SUV.

Acceleration

LS wgn 2WD, auto. LT wgn 4WD, auto. Class Average
5 5 4.4

Lively takeoffs and strong midrange passing power. Autotrac allows these SUVs to compete with Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee with convenient 4WD that doesn't have to be switched off on dry pavement.
Fuel Economy

LS wgn 2WD, auto. LT wgn 4WD, auto. Class Average
4 4 3.6

Fuel economy is about par for midsize 6-cylinder SUVs, around 16.5 mpg overall in our tests.
Ride Quality

LS wgn 2WD, auto. LT wgn 4WD, auto. Class Average
3 4 3.7

Both Blazer and Jimmy offer an unmatched variety of suspension options. Our choice is Blazer's Premium Ride or Jimmy's Luxury Ride setups, as they provide more comfortable going than an Explorer.
Steering/Handling/Braking

LS wgn 2WD, auto. LT wgn 4WD, auto. Class Average
3 3 3.6

Blazer and Jimmy/Envoy have firm steering and good overall balance.
Quietness

LS wgn 2WD, auto. LT wgn 4WD, auto. Class Average
3 3 3.6

Wind noise and road noise are moderate at highway speeds, making GM's midsizers among the quieter-cruising SUVs.
Controls

LS wgn 2WD, auto. LT wgn 4WD, auto. Class Average
6 6 6

Large, clear gauges. Radio and climate controls are mounted high within easy reach.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

LS wgn 2WD, auto. LT wgn 4WD, auto. Class Average
5 5 5.9

Not as spacious as an Explorer or Grand Cherokee, but adequately roomy. Seats are slightly too soft for best long-distance support, and a floor hump protrudes into passenger foot space.
Room/Comfort (rear)

LS wgn 2WD, auto. LT wgn 4WD, auto. Class Average
2 3 4.3

Head room is good, but leg room is not generous and--as in Explorer--the rear seat is too hard and short to provide much comfort. Access is subpar even in 4-door models.
Cargo Room

LS wgn 2WD, auto. LT wgn 4WD, auto. Class Average
7 7 7.5

Only midsize SUVs to offer two tailgate styles, both with independently opening upper glass. With the liftgate you don't have to stretch over a drop-down tailgate to reach into the cargo hold.
Value within Class

LS wgn 2WD, auto. LT wgn 4WD, auto. Class Average
2 3 3.8

A capable engine is a Blazer/Jimmy asset, and with the right suspension, ride quality is quite comfortable. But Explorer, helped by its optional V8 and stouter overall feel, wins our Best Buy nod among direct competitors. Still, optioned thoughtfully, Blazer and Jimmy cost less than many rivals.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
