ACCELERATION
| SLS | STS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6.2 |
Sevilles are strong performers; the SLS emphasizes low-speed snap, the STS high-end power. Transmission behavior is generally smooth and responsive.
FUEL ECONOMY
| SLS | STS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.6 |
In our tests, both models averaged between 14.8 and 16 mpg, depending on driving style. Premium gas is recommended for best performance, but they will run on regular with a slight loss of power.
RIDE QUALITY
| SLS | STS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 6 | 6.5 |
Relatively soft damping gives the SLS a plush, traditional-type ride. The STS has a firmer suspension and aggressive tires that don't smother bumps as well.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| SLS | STS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 7 | 6.3 |
The SLS is only adequate against European rivals. The STS is more athletic, but suffers steering-wheel tug in hard takeoffs, and its magnetic power steering can lag behind driver inputs.
QUIETNESS
| SLS | STS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6.8 |
Any Seville is quiet, though not as hushed as the gold-standard Lexus LS 400. Some coarse-pavement tire thrum spoils the STS, another penalty of its standard high-performance rubber.
CONTROLS
| SLS | STS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 6.2 |
A modern dash presents analog dials and large Lexus-style switches in the STS. We prefer this over the passe digital readouts in the SLS.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| SLS | STS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6.9 |
Plenty of room, but we didn't find the optional air-bladder Adaptive Seats to be that effective.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| SLS | STS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5.1 |
Leg room and shoulder width are only adequate, and tall riders crowd the headliner. Narrow door bottoms complicate entry/exit.
CARGO ROOM
| SLS | STS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 3.9 |
There's ample trunk space, but not much small-item cabin stowage.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| SLS | STS | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 4.1 |
Seville may be sold in over 40 countries, but its size and fuel thirst make it best suited to America. Even then, it doesn't match the likes of Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW for workmanship and overall finesse. Of the two models, we prefer the SLS as offering a better blend of performance and comfort.
