ACCELERATION
| ESC | ETC | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6.4 |
Both Eldorados accelerate swiftly, but the ETC packs its best punch at highway speeds while the ESC is tuned for more power at around-town speeds.
FUEL ECONOMY
| ESC | ETC | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.3 |
Cadillac recommends premium-grade fuel for both models, but says they'll run on regular with a little loss in performance. Our test ETC averaged 17.9 mpg, an ESC 18.
RIDE QUALITY
| ESC | ETC | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 7.5 |
ESCs easily smother most bumps, but tend to float and wallow. The ETC's firmer suspension provides better control but can react harshly over sharp bumps.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| ESC | ETC | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 6 | 5.9 |
No nimble sports coupe. The ESC has competent but uninspired handling. ETC is more precise, though its steering feels artificially heavy. Available StabiliTrak adds a measure of safety, especially on wet roads.
QUIETNESS
| ESC | ETC | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 7.7 |
Engines emit a refined growl under hard throttle, and overall noise levels are low.
CONTROLS
| ESC | ETC | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5.5 |
The ETC's dashboard is stylish and functional, while the ESC's different layout hides climate controls behind the steering wheel.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| ESC | ETC | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 7 | 7.6 |
Plenty of head, leg, and shoulder room. We haven't yet sampled the massaging seats. Wide, heavy doors are awkward in tight spaces.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| ESC | ETC | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 6.8 |
Roomier than most coupes; adults won't complain after a couple hours, though as in most 2-doors, rear entry/exit is a chore.
CARGO ROOM
| ESC | ETC | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 4.4 |
The trunk is roomy, and a low liftover makes loading easy, but there's no pass-through and cabin storage is stingy.
VALUE WITHIN CLASS
| ESC | ETC | Class Average |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 2 | 3.8 |
We'd bypass the stiff-riding ETC for the more comfortable ESC, which costs less and offers better low-speed performance. Either is worth considering if you like this sort of car, but not many people do anymore--which means the slow-selling Eldorados usually carry big discounts.
