2000 Buick Park Avenue Full Review
Date Published: 2/20/08
2000 Buick Park Avenue Review
Front side airbags are newly standard on Buick's flagship sedan for 2000. Park Avenue returns in base form with a 205-horsepower V6 and as the Ultra model with a 240-hp supercharged version of the V6. Both have automatic transmission, antilock brakes, and self-leveling rear suspension. Optional on both is a Gran Touring suspension package that includes firmer suspension settings and more-aggressive tire tread.

Newly standard on Ultra and optional on the base Park Avenue is General Motors' StabiliTrak system, designed to sense an impending skid in a turn and apply the brakes to an individual wheel to keep the car on its intended course. Both models also gain child-seat anchors on the rear package shelf. At midyear, GM's OnStar assistance system became standard on Ultra and available as an option on the base Park Avenue.
Competition
This hotly contested segment has a clear benchmark, it is the Acura TL (and its 2-door cousin Acura CL). The TL succeeds in blending comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price.

But the Acura's not for everyone. We also recommend the sporty and Euro-flavored Audi A6, the comfortable Buick Park Avenue, the affordable and fast Infiniti I30, and the luxury-orientated Lexus ES 300.
News
Park Avenue sales recovered slightly in calendar-year 1999 to near 63,000 units, up nearly 5000 from '98. In 2000, however, orders are running slightly behind '99 for the January-April period, a situation recently reflected in some cash incentives on Park Avenue.

Buick's flagship sedan isn't slated for a full redesign until model-year 2003, though one source says this could be put back to '05, possibly to synchronize the next Park Avenue with the next redesigned LeSabre. Both models currently share the General Motors G-platform, a relationship that should continue for their successors. No word on specifics yet, but the next Park Avenue will probably strive for a more youthful look inside and out. Dimensions should not change appreciably, and front drive will continue.

Meantime, the adoption of the Stabilitrak antiskid system for the 2000 Park Avenue suggests that other Cadillac-pioneered features will find their way into this Buick before it is redesigned. Likely candidates include rear side airbags, air-bladder "adaptive" front seats, roller-massage front seats, infrared Night Vision system, and ultrasonic rear parking-assist proximity warning. All are already standard or optional for Cadillac's various DeVille models.

Consumer Guide® Road Test Ratings
Acceleration

Base Ultra Class Average
5 6 5.6

Ultras are impressively quick. Base models have ample power, helped by the automatic transmission's subtle, alert shifting.
Fuel Economy

Base Ultra Class Average
5 4 4.6

Our test Ultra averaged 15.3 mpg in mostly city driving on recommended premium gas. With more highway miles, we logged 19.8 mpg with a base Park Avenue, which uses regular fuel.
Ride Quality

Base Ultra Class Average
7 7 6.1

The standard chassis favors comfort over handling. The firmer Gran Touring suspension provides better body control and less float on dips.
Steering/Handling/Braking

Base Ultra Class Average
5 6 4.9

Standard suspension is mushy and imprecise, but the Gran Touring option reduces body lean, front-end plowing, and steering numbness.
Quietness

Base Ultra Class Average
7 7 6

Park Avenues feel substantial and quiet, but the Gran Touring's aggressive tires make some noise on coarse pavement.
Controls

Base Ultra Class Average
7 7 5.3

Traditional dashboard layout works well, but the horn takes a hefty shove to sound.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

Base Ultra Class Average
7 7 6.9

Abundant head and leg room on comfortable seats, but the bench seat is too narrow for three adults.
Room/Comfort (rear)

Base Ultra Class Average
6 6 5.8

Not limousine large, but roomy for two adults.
Cargo Room

Base Ultra Class Average
6 6 5.8

Much more than most near-luxury cars, enhanced by a flat trunk floor and low load lip.
Value within Class

Base Ultra Class Average
6 6 6.3

In a class dominated by imports, Park Avenue offers traditional American room, power, and amenities at a competitive price. If that appeals to you, it merits strong consideration.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test Buick Park Avenue 4-door sedan
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
