ACCELERATION

4.4i w/Sport Pkg., nav. sys. Class Average
7 4.8

We haven't yet tested the new 3.0i, but the V8 version has ready acceleration from any speed. Note that the available 19-inch tires offer poor traction in snow.

FUEL ECONOMY

4.4i w/Sport Pkg., nav. sys. Class Average
3 3.2

Just 14.1 mpg in our test of a 4.4i. Both engines require premium fuel.

RIDE QUALITY

4.4i w/Sport Pkg., nav. sys. Class Average
3 3.9

Firmer than the RX 300, softer than the M-Class, and not likely to be punishing on any surface. But rough pavement is felt through seats and steering wheel with the Sport Package. X5s don't bound over wavy surfaces like most truck-type SUVs.

STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING

4.4i w/Sport Pkg., nav. sys. Class Average
6 4.4

No SUV handles better overall, despite some plowing and body lean in tight, fast turns. The Sport suspension sharpens steering response and reduces lean. Some testers felt steering is too stiff at parking-lot speeds.

QUIETNESS

4.4i w/Sport Pkg., nav. sys. Class Average
4 4

Few SUVs isolate wind rush better, but the 19-inch tires roar over coarse surfaces. The V8's sporty tone doesn't intrude, but some testers grew tired of its sound in hard acceleration.

CONTROLS

4.4i w/Sport Pkg., nav. sys. Class Average
4 4.1

Power window controls are awkwardly placed on the driver's armrest and the Navigation System is difficult to operate, but most switchgear is handy and precise.

ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)

4.4i w/Sport Pkg., nav. sys. Class Average
8 7

Plenty of head and leg room. Seats are firm and supportive.

ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)

4.4i w/Sport Pkg., nav. sys. Class Average
4 5.4

Generous head clearance, but limited foot room with the front seats more than halfway back. Rear wheel housings intrude slightly, and the middle-rear position is tighter than in the M-Class and RX 300, which easily fit three adults.

CARGO ROOM

4.4i w/Sport Pkg., nav. sys. Class Average
7 7.2

Access is easy, and the rear seatbacks fold smoothly, but there's less cargo room than an RX 300 or M-class. Also, a ski pass-through costs extra and the accordion-like cargo cover is flimsy and finicky.

VALUE WITHIN CLASS

4.4i w/Sport Pkg., nav. sys. Class Average
2 3

A 4WD RX 300 is better value than the X5 4.4i in a station-wagon-type SUV, while the M-Class remains a satisfying Best Buy among truck-type alternatives. But the 4.4i's mix of performance, comfort, and character is unique among SUVs.
