Vehicle Highlights
Added features mark BMW's 2000-model flagship sedans, which went on sale last May at base prices unchanged from 1999. The V8-powered 740i, longer-wheelbase 740iL, and V12 750iL all gain rain-sensing wipers, and V8 models add several items from the 750, including onboard navigation system, Xenon headlights, headlight washers, and premium audio with 6-disc CD changer. BMW says these additions represent a $4400 value increase for the V8 models.
Also new for 740s is an optional Active Ride Package that borrows the V12 model's Electronic Damping Control shock absorbers and self-leveling rear suspension. BMW's Active Comfort driver's seat is newly standard for the 750 and optional for 740s; rollers in the seat's cushion move periodically in an effort to minimize fatigue. All 7s come with BMW's antiskid Dynamic Stability Control, front side airbags, and BMW's front Head-Protection System with side-window tubular airbags. Rear head-protection airbags are now part of the rear side airbag option. Returning for the 740i is an optional firm-ride Sport Package with black exterior trim, manual-shift Steptronic feature for the automatic transmission, and 18-inch wheels; the last are newly optional on all 7s. Finally, both iL models offer a new $33,000 factory-installed "light armor" option, with fortified "sandwich" glass and aramid-fiber mats surrounding the passenger cell; both are claimed to resist bullets up to .44 magnum.
COMPETITION
This diverse segment offers the widest price range. It covers everything from the $33,000 Saab 9-5 to the $128,000 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $42,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. In the same vein, the more-expensive Lexus LS 400 continues to impress, excelling in every way except for handling.
If you are looking for something a bit more sporting we recommend the BMW 5-Series, Jaguar S-Type, or Lexus GS 300/400. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the new Cadillac DeVille or Mercedes-Benz CLK.
