2000 BMW 7-Series Review
Added features mark BMW's 2000-model flagship sedans, which went on sale last May at base prices unchanged from 1999. The V8-powered 740i, longer-wheelbase 740iL, and V12 750iL all gain rain-sensing wipers, and V8 models add several items from the 750, including onboard navigation system, Xenon headlights, headlight washers, and premium audio with 6-disc CD changer. BMW says these additions represent a $4400 value increase for the V8 models.

Also new for 740s is an optional Active Ride Package that borrows the V12 model's Electronic Damping Control shock absorbers and self-leveling rear suspension. BMW's Active Comfort driver's seat is newly standard for the 750 and optional for 740s; rollers in the seat's cushion move periodically in an effort to minimize fatigue. All 7s come with BMW's antiskid Dynamic Stability Control, front side airbags, and BMW's front Head-Protection System with side-window tubular airbags. Rear head-protection airbags are now part of the rear side airbag option. Returning for the 740i is an optional firm-ride Sport Package with black exterior trim, manual-shift Steptronic feature for the automatic transmission, and 18-inch wheels; the last are newly optional on all 7s. Finally, both iL models offer a new $33,000 factory-installed "light armor" option, with fortified "sandwich" glass and aramid-fiber mats surrounding the passenger cell; both are claimed to resist bullets up to .44 magnum.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range. It covers everything from the $33,000 Saab 9-5 to the $128,000 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $42,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. In the same vein, the more-expensive Lexus LS 400 continues to impress, excelling in every way except for handling.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting we recommend the BMW 5-Series, Jaguar S-Type, or Lexus GS 300/400. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the new Cadillac DeVille or Mercedes-Benz CLK.
News
The 7-Series is being redesigned for a fall 2001 European debut and a probable U.S. launch in the first quarter of '02. Insiders report BMW's flagship sedans will keep to their current overall size, but with longer wheelbases and sleeker, more chiseled styling inspired by that of the recent Z9 concept coupe. The front end features a hoodline raised about two inches, a new version of BMW's trademark "twin kidney" grille topped with chrome brows, and smaller round headlamps that throw high-intensity beams from behind clear composite "double-bubble" covers. Out back is a raised deck that contributes to more trunk space, plus new triangular taillamps whose intensity varies with brake-pedal pressure.

The new 7s are also said to be somewhat lighter than the outgoing models, thanks to more extensive use of aluminum and other lightweight materials, plus weight-saving measures that include a new fiber-optic electrical system running at 42 volts instead of the usual 12. The last implies lots of standard power features, so expect all the customary interior conveniences, plus "active safety" equipment such as antilock brakes, BMW's Dynamic Stability Control antiskid/traction-control system, and BMW's take on radar-linked "smart" cruise control. Airbags should number eight, with standard rear side-impact cushions and BMW's tubular Head Protection System restraints above the side windows.

Also on the cards is more precise rack-and-pinion steering instead of the 7-Series' traditional recirculating ball setup, plus a choice of either conventional steel springs or a new "active suspension." The latter employs computer-managed air springs designed to counteract body roll in hard cornerning, front-end dive in hard braking, and rear-end squat in hard acceleration.

U.S. offerings should remain as is, with standard- and long-wheelbase 740i models and a long-wheelbase V12 sedan. All will feature a new 6-speed automatic transmission as standard, replacing today's 5-speed. An all-wheel-drive option, with hardware borrowed from BMW's X5 sport-utility, is being whispered for some unspecified later date. For the new 740s, BMW's 4.4-liter V8 reportedly goes from 282 horsepower to around 320 via numerous internal revisions. The V12 will be an all-new 6.0-liter unit producing around 400 hp, up from 326 in the current 5.4-liter engine; it will power what should be badged the 760iL. By 2004, the V12 is expected to sire new compact 4.0- and 5.0-liter V8s that will first appear in BMW's next-generation midsize 5-Series, though they probably won't be long migrating to the 7s.

Among the more interesting aspects of the new 7s will be interior controls--or rather the lack of them. According to industry spies, audio, heating/air conditioning, navigation and optional Internet access will all be adjusted by a large centrally mounted hand control that's said to resemble the end of a Coke can and will work in tandem with a large display screen mounted high in the center of the dashboard. Incidentally, the available Web connection should be a first for a BMW, though in today's wired world, you can bet it will spread to other models in due course.

Acceleration

740i 740iL 750iL Class Average
7 7 6 6.4

The V8 is smooth and powerful at all speeds. It's a better value than the pricier V12.
Fuel Economy

740i 740iL 750iL Class Average
4 4 2 4.3

Our test 750iL averaged just 13.2 mpg on mostly highways. A test 740iL averaged 16.5.
Ride Quality

740i 740iL 750iL Class Average
9 10 10 7.5

Among the world's smoothest, aided by long wheelbases, sophisticated suspension, and high weight.
Steering/Handling/Braking

740i 740iL 750iL Class Average
7 7 7 5.9

Surprisingly agile for such large cars. Steering is responsive, body lean is acceptable.
Quietness

740i 740iL 750iL Class Average
8 8 9 7.7

The Lexus LS 400 has less engine and wind noise than V8 7s, but the 750iL is quieter yet.
Controls

740i 740iL 750iL Class Average
5 5 5 5.5

Loaded with gizmos and controls. Most work well, except the confusing climate/audio/cell phone, and the distracting in-dash navigation system.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

740i 740iL 750iL Class Average
9 9 9 7.6

Supportive seats have 14- to 16-way power adjustment depending on model. Head room isn't vast, but leg, knee, and elbow room are generous.
Room/Comfort (rear)

740i 740iL 750iL Class Average
8 9 9 6.8

All 7s are wide enough for three adults, and have good head room and easy rear entry/exit. Leg room is best in the long-wheelbase iL models.
Cargo Room

740i 740iL 750iL Class Average
3 3 3 4.4

The trunk isn't huge, but the space is all usable and nicely finished.
Value within Class

740i 740iL 750iL Class Average
3 3 2 3.8

Flawless workmanship and impressive materials are expected of top-echelon cars, and the 7-Series has them, though our most recent test car suffered several rattles and an inoperative rear power window switch. With luxury car sales soft, the 7-Series should be available at discounts. The aging 7-Series models have a tough rival in the new 2000 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but are impressive cars by any measure.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.
