ACCELERATION
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 6 | 6.4 |
The V8 is smooth and powerful at all speeds. It's a better value than the pricier V12.
FUEL ECONOMY
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4 | 2 | 4.3 |
Our test 750iL averaged just 13.2 mpg on mostly highways. A test 740iL averaged 16.5.
RIDE QUALITY
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 10 | 10 | 7.5 |
Among the world's smoothest, aided by long wheelbases, sophisticated suspension, and high weight.
STEERING/HANDLING/BRAKING
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 7 | 7 | 5.9 |
Surprisingly agile for such large cars. Steering is responsive, body lean is acceptable.
QUIETNESS
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 8 | 9 | 7.7 |
The Lexus LS 400 has less engine and wind noise than V8 7s, but the 750iL is quieter yet.
CONTROLS
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 5 | 5.5 |
Loaded with gizmos and controls. Most work well, except the confusing climate/audio/cell phone, and the distracting in-dash navigation system.
ROOM/COMFORT/DRIVER SEATING (FRONT)
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | 9 | 9 | 7.6 |
Supportive seats have 14- to 16-way power adjustment depending on model. Head room isn't vast, but leg, knee, and elbow room are generous.
ROOM/COMFORT (REAR)
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 9 | 9 | 6.8 |
All 7s are wide enough for three adults, and have good head room and easy rear entry/exit. Leg room is best in the long-wheelbase iL models.
CARGO ROOM
| 740i | 740iL | 750iL | Class Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | 3 | 3 | 4.4 |
The trunk isn't huge, but the space is all usable and nicely finished.

Flawless workmanship and impressive materials are expected of top-echelon cars, and the 7-Series has them, though our most recent test car suffered several rattles and an inoperative rear power window switch. With luxury car sales soft, the 7-Series should be available at discounts. The aging 7-Series models have a tough rival in the new 2000 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but are impressive cars by any measure.
