2000 BMW 3-Series Review
BMW's best-selling line offers 2-door coupes and convertibles and 4-door sedans and wagons. All these compact-sized cars use inline 6-cylinder engines. Sedans and coupes come as 170-horsepower 2.5-liter 323 models and in 190-hp 2.8-liter 328 form. The convertible and the 4-door wagon are 323s. Due this fall is a 330Ci convertible powered by a new 225-hp 3.0-liter inline-6 that will also replace the 2.8 in 2001 sedans and coupes. BMW also adds all-wheel-drive 3.0-liter sedans and wagons this fall.
All offer manual transmission or extra-cost 5-speed automatic with separate manual-shift gate. Standard are traction control and systems designed to enhance stability under hard braking in turns and to prevent skids during rapid direction changes. Front side airbags are standard, and all but the convertible have BMW's front Head Protection System tubular airbags. Rear side airbags are sedan and wagon options.
The convertible and coupe seat four, other models five. A manual folding soft top is standard on the convertible, with a power folding soft top and an aluminum hard top optional; all have a heated glass rear window. Roll bars behind the convertible's rear seats are designed to deploy automatically if the car is about to flip over. The 323i wagon features a one-piece tailgate with separate-opening glass rear window. Returning in late calendar 2000 is the revamped M3 coupe, now with a 3.2-liter six of about 330 hp.
Competition
This hotly contested segment has a clear benchmark, it is the Acura TL (and its 2-door cousin Acura CL). The TL succeeds in blending comfort, style, luxury, and sport into an efficient package at an affordable price.
But the Acura's not for everyone. We also recommend the sporty and Euro-flavored Audi A6, the comfortable Buick Park Avenue, the affordable and fast Infiniti I30, and the luxury-orientated Lexus ES 300.
News
Introduction of a new-design convertible and America's first-ever 3-Series wagon completes the current overhaul of BMW's most popular model line. All that's missing from the latest "E46" range (that's BMW-speak; previous 3s were "E36") is a new high-performance M3, and that's on deck for this fall as a 2001 model.
Initially available only as a coupe, the latest M3 retains a 3.2-liter inline-6, but with slightly greater displacement (3245cc vs. 3201) and around 343 horsepower. That's about 100 hp more than found in previous U.S.-market M3s, which were tuned for more low-end torque than Euro models to better suit our driving conditions. A 6-speed manual gearbox continues, but channels power through a new electronically controlled differential claimed to provide better traction than a conventional diff. Other changes include larger 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, standard 18-inch alloy wheels spreading eight inches wide in front and nine inches in the rear, and special Michelin Pilot Sport tires sized at 225/45 fore and 335/40 aft. Handling-oriented suspension tuning is again unique among 3-Series models, as are interior touches like white-faced gauges, more heavily bolstered sport front seats, and M5-style oil-temperature warning lights circling the tachometer. Exterior spotting points include the usual front air dam with large air ducts for engine and front brakes, side-sill skirting, flared wheelarches to accommodate the wider tires, a subtle "lip" spoiler for the decklid, hood "power bulge," four exhaust outlets, and a small slatted gill in each front fender. Standard amenities will likely include trip computer, automatic climate control and satellite navigation system, though the last may be listed at extra cost. As for performance, BMW says the '01 M3 should be as quick as big brother M5, capable of 0-60 mph in about 5 seconds.

Acceleration

328i sdn, man. 323Ci cpe, auto. Class Average
7 4 5.3

The 2.5-liter is almost as fast as the 2.8, which did 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds in our test of a manual-transmission sedan.
Fuel Economy

328i sdn, man. 323Ci cpe, auto. Class Average
6 7 5.7

We averaged 23.5 mpg in tests of a 328i. Premium fuel is mandatory on all 3-Series.
Ride Quality

328i sdn, man. 323Ci cpe, auto. Class Average
7 7 5.3

Firm but comfortable in base form; available Sport Packages make things choppier. M3s can be harsh and thumpy over bumps.
Steering/Handling/Braking

328i sdn, man. 323Ci cpe, auto. Class Average
8 7 6.4

Agile and grippy. Cornering Brake Control enhances stability under hard braking in turns. Wider tires on these rear-drive cars offer poor traction in snow.
Quietness

328i sdn, man. 323Ci cpe, auto. Class Average
6 6 5

Sedans are well isolated from all noise. Coupes are nearly as good. M3s have noticeable tire noise, and convertibles have added wind noise.
Controls

328i sdn, man. 323Ci cpe, auto. Class Average
5 5 6

Well laid out dashboard is augmented by available steering-wheel audio and cruise controls.
Room/Comfort/Driver Seating (front)

328i sdn, man. 323Ci cpe, auto. Class Average
6 6 5.4

Cabin is upright and narrow-feeling, but has plenty of head and leg room.
Room/Comfort (rear)

328i sdn, man. 323Ci cpe, auto. Class Average
3 3 3.3

Decent knee and foot space, considerably less with the front seats back. Entry/exit is difficult in coupes.
Cargo Room

328i sdn, man. 323Ci cpe, auto. Class Average
2 2 3.6

Sufficient trunk room in sedans. Slightly less in coupes, but they have folding rear seatbacks.
Value within Class

328i sdn, man. 323Ci cpe, auto. Class Average
4 4 3.3

These BMWs are the "driver's cars" of the near-luxury class, offering spirited performance, high refinement, and terrific workmanship. As such, they're good values, trailing some rivals in expected standard features but making up ground with blue-chip resale values.

Pricing Key: Retail prices listed with each report are set by the vehicle's manufacturer. These figures appear on each car's federally mandated window sticker. Most price lists also include dealer-invoice prices. Dealer-invoice prices are what the dealer pays the manufacturer for the car and its factory-installed options. The destination charge is not included in the suggested-retail or dealer-invoice price and must be added to the cost of the vehicle. Car companies change prices frequently throughout the year. If the prices published do not match those on the vehicle's window sticker, the manufacturer has probably altered the price recently.

NHTSA Crash-Test Results
Test BMW 3-Series 2-door coupe BMW 3-Series 4-door sedan BMW 3-Series 2-door convertible BMW 3-Series 4-door wagon
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) tests a vehicle's worthiness in front- and side-impact collisions and rates its resistance to rollovers. Front-impact crash-test numbers indicate the chance of serious injury: 5 = 10% or less; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-35%; 2 = 35-45%; 1 = More than 45%. Side-impact crash-test numbers indicate: 5 = 5% or less; 4 = 6-10%; 3 = 11-20%; 2 = 21-25%; 1 = More than 26%. Rollover resistance numbers indicate the chance for rollover when the vehicle leaves the roadway: 5 = Less than 10%; 4 = 10-20%; 3 = 20-30%; 2 = 30-40%; 1 = More than 40%.
