2000 Audi A8 Review
Standard "curtain" airbags, more power, a lower starting price, and a companion stretched model head an unusually long list of changes for Audi's slow-selling flagship sedan. A U.S. newcomer for 1997, the A8 continues with extensive aluminum construction, 4.2-liter V8, 5-speed "automanual" transmission, and Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive. This year, a switch from two to five valves per cylinder, plus other engine changes, lifts horsepower by 10 and torque by 7 foot-pounds. The A8 also gets some structural strengthening, a minor restyle inside and out, aluminum instead of steel suspension components, standard power rear-seat lumbar adjustment, and a $3000 lighter base price, an effort to perk up sales.

Added last winter was a costlier A8 L with a 5.1-inch longer wheelbase and 2.7 inches more rear leg room. The A8 L comes with an antiskid Electronic Stability Program (ESP), satellite-linked navigation system, heated front and rear seats, and a rear-window sunshade, all of which are available for the standard A8. The nav system provides voice and visual readouts but no dashboard display. Audi's ESP integrates with standard antilock brakes and traction control.

The A8's newly standard "Sideguard" curtain airbags drop from above the doors in a side impact, thus matching a safety feature of the rival BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class. Four door-mounted airbags remain standard. Other no-cost additions for both models include a 3-point rear center seatbelt, steering-wheel audio controls, and auto-dimming mirrors. One other feature new to this Audi is an optional "Acoustic Parking System" that signals when the car is reversing near an obstacle. Returning options include 17- and 18-inch wheels (versus the standard 16s), Xenon headlamps, and a "solar" sunroof that can be used to recharge the battery. Due in early calendar 2001 is a 360-hp S8 model.
Competition
This diverse segment offers the widest price range. It covers everything from the $33,000 Saab 9-5 to the $128,000 Mercedes-Benz SL500. Obviously our Best Buys are somewhere in between. We think that the Acura RL is a steal at $42,000 fully equipped. Though it is a front-drive V6 in a field of V8 rear-drive models, it has a great ride, plenty of power, and is quite luxurious. In the same vein, the more-expensive Lexus LS 400 continues to impress, excelling in every way except for handling.

If you are looking for something a bit more sporting we recommend the BMW 5-Series, Jaguar S-Type, or Lexus GS 300/400. If your taste ranges more toward the luxury end, then take a look at the new Cadillac DeVille or Mercedes-Benz CLK.
News
Though a big on advance on previous big Audis, the A8 has come little closer to matching the popularity of rival luxury imports like the BMW 7-Series, Lexus LS 400, and Mercedes S-Class. A8 sales for calendar '99 were just 2841 versus over 18,000 for the 7-Series, 16,000-plus for the LS 400 and over 28,000 for the S-Class. There are reasons for the A8's low sales. Aluminum-intensive construction puts it at a price disadvantage against direct rivals and also limits supply. Then too, Audi isn't widely seen as a "high-luxury" brand like Mercedes or Lexus.

Despite these drawbacks, the next A8, which should arrive here in late 2002, will continue with Audi's ASF (aluminum space frame) construction, but with improvements that will make the car lighter, stronger and cheaper to build. European reports also indicate a lighter quattro all-wheel-drive system with reduced internal friction for better performance and mileage.

Few other details are available now, but expect the current 310-horsepower 4.2-liter V8 to return with standard automatic transmission, perhaps with six forward gears. The new A8 may also be offered here as a sportier S8 model, as the current car already is in Europe, with fortified suspension and other enhancements, including a power boost to 360.
