The 2.8 models feel underpowered, but 2.7T and 4.2 sedans are fast. Preview drives suggest Audi's 0-60 mph claims are realistic at 6.8 seconds for either model with automatic, 6.0 seconds for the 6-speed 2.7.

We haven't yet measured fuel economy in the 2.7 or 4.2, but the 2.8 V6 got 22.4 mpg in a front-drive sedan and 19.2 in an automatic Avant in our tests. All require premium fuel.

The 2.8s thump over small bumps, but absorb rough pavement well. The new performance sedans are comfortable despite firmer damping.

Steering is firm and communicative. Straight-line stability is excellent, and few midsize cars corner with more poise or grip.

Wind noise is very low, but the tires thump and whine, and the engine is not as refined-sounding as some rivals.

Supportive seat and plenty of leg room and head room. The wagon's 2-place third-row seat is for children only.

The 2.7T and V8 sedans challenge the sportiest 5-Series and E-Class models for performance and roadability, yet sell for less. So do the 2.8 A6s versus the rival 528i and E320. Regardless of model, these Audis offer Teutonic solidity, high refinement, loads of driving satisfaction, and top-drawer workmanship, plus free scheduled maintenance for 3 years/50,000 miles. We recommend them highly.
