The S4 is outstanding, but other A4s are less impressive. We timed an automatic 2.8 Quattro sedan at 9.3 seconds 0-60 mph. Front-drive A4s are lighter and faster, but trail most rivals. The 1.8 turbo is best with manual transmission but feels adequate with automatic.

Our test V6 Quattro sedans averaged 17.5-21.5 mpg, our test 1.8T Quattros around 23 mpg. All require premium fuel.

Well-designed suspension controls body lean and absorbs most bumps. The harsher Sport package is comparable to the S4's chassis.

Modest body lean, and firm, quick steering. Traction is good on front-drive A4s, excellent on Quattros.

Some models' performance tires are noisy on rough pavement. The 4-cylinder engine growls at high rpm, and our test 1.8T Quattro had an annoying drivetrain drone at 65 mph.

Mostly clear and well placed, but the complicated climate control panel is mounted too low, and the Navigation System is hard to use.

Plenty of leg room and head clearance. The standard seats are supportive, but the sport versions are quite firm.

Too narrow for three adults. Leg space is limited with front seats back, and the sunroof makes head room tight.

Okay in sedans. The Avant is more casual hauler than big-load wagon. All models have usefully shaped flat-floor compartments.

Despite the tight rear seat, the A4 compares well with near-luxury competitors. It's also one of the few with a wagon, with all-wheel drive, and with a performer like the pricey but potent S4. Add in free scheduled maintenance for 3 years/50,000 miles and any A4 deserves a look.
