Trouble Spots

Consumer Guide's® Auto Editors have scoured repair bulletins and questioned mechanics to search for commonly occurring problems for a particular vehicle. In some cases we also give possible manufacturer-suggested solutions. In many instances these trouble spots are Technical Service Bulletins posted by the manufacturer, however, we have our own expert looking at additional vehicle problems.

Brakes: A squeal from the front brakes may be due to the compound of the friction material so different pads may correct the problem. (1990-94)

Brakes: A knocking noise is usually caused by loose caliper main sleeves that must be replaced. (1990-93)

Clutch: A squealing noise when releasing the clutch is probably due to mismatched springs in the cushioning plate of the clutch. (1990-93)

Engine noise: A ticking noise from the top of the engine is likely due to inadequate hydraulic lash adjusters for the valves. (1990-93)

Timing belt: There is a revised, more-robust timing-belt tensioner pulley to replace the original that often caused squealing. (1990-94)

Water leak: Water on the front floor is probably coming in through the firewall at the liner around the heater pipes. (1990-93)

Consumer Guide® Estimated Repair Costs

The dollar amount includes the cost of the part(s) and labor (based on $50 per hour) for the typical repair without extras or add-ons.
