Trouble Spots

Consumer Guide's® Auto Editors have scoured repair bulletins and questioned mechanics to search for commonly occurring problems for a particular vehicle. In some cases we also give possible manufacturer-suggested solutions. In many instances these trouble spots are Technical Service Bulletins posted by the manufacturer, however, we have our own expert looking at additional vehicle problems.

Automatic transmission: Harsh shifts into second or fourth gears on cars with automatic transmissions is probably due to a missing or defective air-exhaust plug. (1990-94)

Blower motor: If the blower motor is noisy or jams and blows the fuse, or if the inside of the windshield fogs up, there may be a water leak at the plenum. (1990-94)

Engine misfire: Stalling at idle, no air conditioning, and a "check engine" light could be caused by a bad ground. Splicing a ground wire into the original one leading to the computer might solve the problem. (1990-94)

Manual transmission: Gear clashes or grinding when shifting from second to third gear is corrected by installing beefier synchronizers. (1992-94)

Water leak: Water on the floor from what appears to be a leaking heater core is really a leaking heater valve. (1990-94)

Consumer Guide® Estimated Repair Costs

This table lists costs of likely repairs for comparison with other vehicles. The dollar amount includes the cost of the part(s) and labor (based on $50 per hour) for the typical repair without extras or add-ons. Like the pricing information, replacement costs can vary widely depending on region. Expect charges at a new-car dealership to be slightly higher.
